Rossarden is a small rural town in Tasmania, Australia. It is located about 81 kilometers (50 miles) east of Longford. In 2021, only 48 people lived in Rossarden. This town is special because it was once a very important place for tin mining.

A Look Back: Rossarden's History

Rossarden officially became a recognized locality in 1973. It is an old mining town found in the north-east part of Tasmania. You can find it about 19 kilometers (12 miles) from Avoca, and it's close to the famous Ben Lomond mountain.

The Rise of a Mining Town

Rossarden came to be because of the tin mining work done by the Aberfoyle Tin Mining Company. This company needed many workers, so people moved to the area. The town is nestled in a valley, with Stacks Bluff (a mountain 1527 meters or 5000 feet tall) nearby.

Rossarden was once one of Australia's main towns for producing tin. However, the mine closed down in 1982. The main road leading into and out of the town is called Rossarden Road.

Changes in Population

Over the years, the number of people living in Rossarden has changed.

Growing Pains and Community Life

By 1933, Rossarden was growing steadily. It had a town hall, a post office, and 17 new homes built in just a few months. The community even held a ball to raise money for tennis and badminton courts. The post office officially opened on November 20, 1933.

Other nearby places include Storeys Creek, which had a wolfram (another type of metal) mine, and the towns of Fingal and Avoca. The band Weddings Parties Anything even wrote a song called "Rossarden" about the town's decline.
