Ruth Chepng'etich (born August 8, 1994) is a super fast runner from Kenya. She is known for her amazing long-distance running. Ruth holds the world record for the women's marathon race! She ran it in an incredible 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds at the 2024 Chicago Marathon.

Ruth is also a world champion in the marathon. She has won the famous Chicago Marathon three times: in 2021, 2022, and 2024. She was the first woman ever to run a marathon faster than 2 hours and 11 minutes, and then faster than 2 hours and 10 minutes! She also has one of the fastest times ever for a half marathon.

Ruth's Running Journey

Starting Strong in 2018

In 2018, Ruth won the Istanbul Marathon. This was a big race that many top runners compete in. She finished in 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 35 seconds. This was the fastest time ever run in Turkey at that point. It also made her one of the fastest women in history to run a marathon.

Winning Gold in 2019

Ruth continued to shine in 2019. She set a new record at the Dubai Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 8 seconds.

Later that year, she became a world champion! She won the marathon at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. The race started at midnight because it was so hot and humid. Even with the tough conditions, Ruth pushed through to win the gold medal.

Big Wins in 2020 and 2021

In 2020, Ruth earned a bronze medal by finishing third at the 2020 London Marathon.

The next year, in April 2021, she set a new world record for the half marathon! She ran it in 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 2 seconds at the Istanbul Half Marathon. This was 29 seconds faster than the old record. Even though her record has since been broken, it's still one of the fastest times ever.

In October 2021, Ruth won her first major marathon, the 2021 Chicago Marathon. She ran the first half of the race very quickly and held on to win by almost two minutes.

Dominating in 2022

Ruth had an amazing year in 2022. In March, she won the Nagoya Women's Marathon in Japan. She ran the race in 2 hours, 17 minutes, and 18 seconds. This was the second fastest women's only marathon time ever at that point. She even won a huge prize of $250,000!

In October, Ruth won the 2022 Chicago Marathon again! She finished in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 18 seconds. This was her personal best time and the second-fastest marathon time in history at that moment. She ran the first half of the race incredibly fast. This win made her the first woman to run a marathon under 2 hours and 18 minutes three times.

World Record in 2024

On October 13, 2024, Ruth made history at the Chicago Marathon. She set a brand new world record for the marathon, finishing in an incredible 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds! She broke the old record by almost two minutes. Ruth was the first woman ever to run faster than 2 hours and 11 minutes, and then faster than 2 hours and 10 minutes in a marathon. She said she dedicated her world record to Kelvin Kiptum, a fellow Kenyan runner who also held a world record and sadly passed away.
