Sagadat Nurmagambetov was born on May 25, 1924. His birthplace was Kosym, a settlement in what was then the Kazakh Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic. This area is now part of the Aqmola Region in Kazakhstan.
He joined the Red Army in 1942, when he was 18 years old. He quickly received special training to become a machine gun officer. In April 1943, he was sent to the front lines of World War II. He led different groups, starting with a machine gun platoon, then a machine gun company, and finally an infantry battalion.
For his courage and leadership, he was awarded the special title of Hero of the Soviet Union. This happened on February 27, 1945. He also received the Order of Lenin. He fought bravely in the famous Battle of Berlin. In April 1945, he led his battalion's soldiers in the attack on Berlin's Reich Chancellery.
After the War
After World War II ended, Nurmagambetov continued his military education. He attended the Frunze Military Academy from June 1946 to November 1949.
