Music Career Highlights
Early Life and First Album
Samuel Salter grew up in Los Angeles as one of seven children. He started singing gospel music at his church, Faithful Church of God in Christ. He also won many local talent shows. His singing style was inspired by famous artists like Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.
In 1997, Sam Salter's demo tape (a recording of his songs) reached L.A. Reid at LaFace Records. Reid quickly signed him to the record label. Salter then began working on his first album with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. He also worked with producers Tricky Stewart and Laney Stewart, and other artists like Tony Rich and Robin Thicke.
His first song, "After 12, Before 6," came out in early 1997. It became a Top 20 R&B hit. A remixed version of the song was also very popular on the radio and on BET. His first album, It's On Tonight, was released on September 23, 1997. It received good reviews from music critics.
The next year, he had another hit song from the album called "There You Are." It reached the Top 40 on the R&B charts. During this time, Sam Salter also started writing songs for other artists, including the group 98 Degrees and singer Kandi Burruss.
Second Album and New Opportunities
In 1999, Sam Salter started getting ready for his second album with LaFace Records. The first song from this album was "Once My Sh.. (Always My Sh..)." He finished the album, which was called Little Black Book, and it was planned for release in 2000. However, the album was not released because of changes at the record label.
Even though his album wasn't released, some of his songs were recorded by other popular artists. For example, Boyz II Men recorded "Color Of Love," and Sisqó recorded "Incomplete," which became a number one hit song.
Working Behind the Scenes and Independent Music
After leaving LaFace Records, Sam Salter continued to write songs for many artists. He wrote for singers like Jesse Powell, B2K, Tyrese, and Deborah Cox. He also became a music engineer, helping to record and mix music for artists like J. Holiday.
In 2005, he worked with the group Talking Book on their song "On a September Morn." He also started acting in stage plays. In 2006, he was in What a Man Wants, What a Woman Needs with Shirley Murdock. In 2009, he appeared in another play called There’s a Stranger in My House with Vivica A. Fox.
Sam Salter also worked on his third album, Strictly 4 The Bedroom, hoping to release it in 2008. Some songs from this album were shared online, but the album was not fully released. He kept writing and producing music for artists like El DeBarge and Charlie Wilson.
Later, he released his own songs independently. These included "Straight 2 Heaven" (2010), "Got Me" (2010), and "To Be Loved" (2011). He also worked with other artists on their songs, like "Mayday" with Rayviss in 2013, and "Bye Bunny (She's Gone)" with JEDI in 2017. He also contributed to albums by K. Michelle and Chantelle Barry.
In 2019, he was featured on the song "Under the Veil" with Solé and Shae Jones. In 2020, he collaborated on "Down There" with Rich Moolah and Andiel. Some songs from his second album, Little Black Book, were finally released on streaming services through R&B collections.
Death
Sam Salter passed away on August 27, 2021, at the age of 46.
