The Famous Star House and Community Events
Since 1958, a house in San Antonio Heights has put up a huge five-point star made of lights. This star is located north of Euclid Avenue. It lights up every holiday season, from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. The star is 35 feet tall and can be seen for miles across the Pomona Valley.
Sadly, in 2003, the star and the house were destroyed by a big fire called the Grand Prix Fire. But the community helped raise over $20,000 to rebuild it! A temporary, even bigger star (65 feet tall) was put up with a crane for a few years.
In 2006, the star couldn't be lit because its copper wires were stolen. Because of this, hundreds of people in San Antonio Heights bought smaller stars. They put these on their own houses during the holidays, and it's a tradition that continues today!
Ken Petschow, the owner of the property and a commercial airline pilot, started lighting the star again in 2007.
The community also holds three fun events each year:
- A pancake breakfast the weekend before Memorial Day.
- A "Steakfest" in mid-September.
- A Holiday Sing-Along on Christmas Eve at Local Fire Station 12.
All these events happen at San Antonio Park, except for the sing-along.
