Santanoni Peak is a tall mountain found in Essex County, New York. It is part of the Santanoni Mountains, which are a smaller group within the larger Adirondacks. Santanoni Peak is also inside the Santanoni Preserve, a large area of land that used to be private.

About Santanoni Peak
Santanoni Peak stands tall at 4,606 ft (1,404 m). This makes it one of the highest mountains in the area. It is the 14th highest of the famous Adirondack High Peaks. These peaks are popular for hiking and exploring.
Where is Santanoni Peak?
This mountain is located in the town of Newcomb. It is surrounded by other peaks. To the north, you can find Panther Peak. To the southwest, there is Little Santanoni Mountain. All these mountains are part of the beautiful Adirondack Park.
What's in a Name?
The name "Santanoni" has an interesting history. Many people believe it comes from the Abenaki language. It is thought to be a version of "Saint Anthony." Early French fur traders and missionaries came to this area long ago. They likely named the place after Saint Anthony of Padua.
Water from the Mountain
Water from Santanoni Peak flows in different directions.
- Water from the east side goes into the eastern Santanoni Brook. This water eventually reaches Henderson Lake. Henderson Lake is actually where the famous Hudson River begins! The Hudson River then flows all the way to New York Bay.
- Water from the south side flows into the southern Santanoni Brook. This water joins Newcomb Lake and the Newcomb River. It also ends up in the Hudson River.
- Water from the west and southwest sides flows into different brooks and creeks. These include Ermine Brook and Calahan Brook. This water eventually reaches the Raquette River. The Raquette River then flows north into Canada. It joins the Saint Lawrence River and finally reaches the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Santanoni Peak is located within the High Peaks Wilderness Area. This is a special part of New York's Adirondack Park. Wilderness areas are protected places where nature is kept wild. They offer great opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and enjoying nature.
