Saona Island is a very popular place for tourists. Many visitors come from all over the Dominican Republic. They arrive on large catamarans and small motorboats every day. The island is famous for its amazing beaches. Filmmakers and advertisers often use it as a perfect "deserted island" setting.

Some famous movies filmed here include Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) and The Blue Lagoon.

Island History: How Saona Got Its Name

The name Saona might come from an old language called Macoris. Some experts think it means "full of bats." However, most people agree that Christopher Columbus named the island.

Columbus landed on Saona Island in May 1494. This was during his second trip to the Americas. He named it "Saona" to honor his friend, Michele da Cuneo. Michele was from a city called Savona in Italy. Columbus even made Michele da Cuneo the first governor of the island.

Around the year 1500, the Taino people living on the island grew a lot of cassava. They sent most of it to the city of Santo Domingo.

Saona Island and Savona in Italy are still like twin cities. They have a special friendship. For example, the small power plant on Saona Island was a gift from Savona.
