Sarah Fredrika Sjöström (born August 17, 1993) is a famous Swedish swimmer. She is known for her amazing speed in freestyle and butterfly races. Many people consider her one of the best swimmers of all time.

Sarah has won many medals throughout her career. She has earned 23 individual medals at the long course World Championships, which is more than any other swimmer in history. In 2019, she became the only female swimmer to win five individual medals at one World Championships event. She also holds several world records in swimming.

Sarah is the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming. She has competed in five Olympic Games, from Beijing 2008 to Paris 2024. She has won six Olympic medals: three gold, two silver, and one bronze.

Sarah's Swimming Journey

Early Career: 2008-2009

Sarah Sjöström started making a name for herself very early. In March 2008, when she was just 14, she won a gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly at the 2008 European Aquatics Championships. She even set a new Swedish record!

Later that year, she competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. She was very young for the Olympics.

In 2009, at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships, Sarah set a new world record in the 100 meter butterfly. She won the gold medal and broke her own record the very next day!

Growing Success: 2010-2012

At the 2010 European Aquatics Championships, Sarah successfully defended her 100 meter butterfly title. She also helped her team win bronze and silver medals in relay races.

The 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai were tough, and she finished just outside the medals in several events. However, she kept working hard.

In 2012, at the 2012 European Aquatics Championships, she won two more gold medals in the 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter freestyle. She also helped her team win a silver medal in a relay.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sarah reached the finals in the 100 meter butterfly, finishing fourth.

Breaking Records: 2013-2014

Sarah continued her success at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, Spain. She won a gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly and a silver medal in the 100 meter freestyle.

In December 2013, at the 2013 European Short Course Swimming Championships, she won four individual medals, including two golds in butterfly events.

A big moment came in July 2014 when Sarah broke the world record in the 50 meter butterfly. She swam incredibly fast, beating the old record by a large amount. At the 2014 European Aquatics Championships that summer, she won three gold and four silver medals.

In December 2014, at the World Short Course Championships, Sarah set two new world records in the 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter freestyle, winning gold medals in both. She also won gold in the 50 meter butterfly and a silver in the 100 meter freestyle.

Olympic Gold and More Records: 2015-2016

In 2015, Sarah received several awards, including the Jerring Prize. At the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, she won five medals. She earned gold in both the 50 meter and 100 meter butterfly events, breaking the 100 meter butterfly world record twice! She also won silver in the 100 meter freestyle and 4x100 meter medley relay, plus a bronze in the 50 meter freestyle.

The highlight of 2016 was the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On August 7, Sarah won the gold medal in the 100 meter butterfly, setting a new world record. This made her the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic swimming gold medal. She also won a silver medal in the 200 meter freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle.

Continued Dominance: 2017-2019

In 2017, Sarah continued to dominate. At the 2017 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, she won three gold medals in the 100 meter butterfly, 50 meter butterfly, and 50 meter freestyle. She also set a new world record in the 100 meter freestyle during a relay race. She became the first woman to win four gold medals in one individual event at the World Championships.

Throughout 2017, Sarah broke six world records in less than a month across different competitions. She held eight world records at one point, showing her incredible skill.

At the 2017 European Short Course Swimming Championships, she won two gold and three silver medals. In 2018, at the 2018 European Aquatics Championships, she won four more gold medals in her sprint events.

At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, Sarah won five medals. She took gold in the 50 meter butterfly for the third time in a row. She also won two silver medals (100 meter butterfly, 50 meter freestyle) and two bronze medals (200 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle). She was named the top female swimmer of the meet.

In the fall of 2019, Sarah was a co-captain for the Energy Standard team in the first International Swimming League. Her team won the championship, and Sarah was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the entire season.

Overcoming Challenges: 2020-2021

In 2020, Sarah faced a challenge when she broke her elbow in an accident. She worked hard to recover and returned to competitive swimming in June 2021, just before the Olympics.

At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo (held in 2021), Sarah won a silver medal in the 50 meter freestyle. Her determination to win a medal after her injury earned her the "Olympic Resilience Award."

At the 2021 European Short Course Swimming Championships, Sarah won four gold medals and two other medals. Later in December, at the World Short Course Championships, she won three gold medals, including one where her team tied a world record in the 4x50 meter medley relay. She also won three silver medals and one bronze.

By the end of 2021, Sarah was one of the few swimmers to consistently rank in the top ten globally for many years. She was also tied for second place in the number of individual world records set in the 21st century.

Recent Achievements: 2022-2024

In June 2022, at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, Sarah won a silver medal in the 100 meter freestyle. The next day, she won her fourth straight gold medal in the 50 meter butterfly at the World Championships. On the final day, she won another gold in the 50 meter freestyle. This was her tenth individual gold medal at the World Championships, making her the first European swimmer to achieve this.

In August 2022, at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, Sarah won two gold medals in the 50 meter butterfly and 50 meter freestyle. She also won a silver and a bronze medal in relays. These medals made her the swimmer with the most medals ever at the European Aquatics Championships, with a total of 28!

In 2023, at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, Sarah won gold in the 50 meter freestyle, breaking her own world record in the semifinal. She also won the 50 meter butterfly for the fifth time in a row at the World Championships. These wins meant she surpassed Michael Phelps for the most individual World Aquatics Championship medals in history, with 21.

In February 2024, at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Sarah continued her winning streak. She won gold in the 50 meter freestyle and the 50 meter butterfly, making it her sixth consecutive win in the 50 meter butterfly at the World Championships.

At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Sarah focused on shorter distances. She won a gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle, a distance where she held the world record but had not won Olympic gold before. She then won another gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle. She also helped her Swedish teammates to a 5th place finish in the 4x100m freestyle relay and a 7th place finish in the 4x100m medley relay.
