The African red toad or African split-skin toad (Schismaderma carens) is a type of toad found in Africa. It belongs to the Bufonidae family, which includes many different kinds of toads. This toad is unique because it is the only species in its special group, called the genus Schismaderma.
Where African Red Toads Live
These toads are found in many countries across Africa. You can find them in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. They might also live in Lesotho.
Their Habitats
African red toads can live in many different places. They like dry savannas and moist savanna areas. You can also find them in dry or moist shrublands. They live in dry lowland grasslands too.
They are often found near water. This includes freshwater marshes and temporary marshes. They can also live in places changed by humans, like arable land (farms) and pastureland. Sometimes, they even live in urban areas, near water storage areas, ponds, canals, and ditches.
How African Red Toads Are Doing
The African red toad is listed as "Least Concern" (LC) by the IUCN. This means that scientists believe there are still many of these toads around. They are not currently at high risk of disappearing.
