Scotts Mills is part of the larger Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. This area includes Salem and nearby communities. The city is also close to where the 1993 Scotts Mills earthquake happened.

The city got its name from two important mills. These were a sawmill and a flour mill. They were built on Butte Creek by Robert Hall Scott and Thomas Scott. Around 1866, people started calling the area "Scotts Mills." Thomas Scott also became the first postmaster here in 1887.

Fun at Scotts Mills Park

Scotts Mills Park is a great place for outdoor activities. Marion County manages the park. It first opened in 1961. The land for the park was given by Portland General Electric and by Merle and Barbara Haskins. In 2023, the park grew even bigger thanks to Terry and Patty Caster.

The park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset, from May to October. You can find play fields, playground equipment, and picnic tables there. It also has restrooms, a beautiful waterfall, a wading pool, and a swimming hole in Butte Creek.
