Seafair is a big summer festival in Seattle, Washington, USA. It's an exciting yearly event with boat races, amazing air shows, and lots of fun parties. Some of the main parts of Seafair include the Torchlight Parade, fast hydroplane boat races, and an incredible air show. The famous Blue Angels often fly their jets in the air show! There are also many smaller parties and local parades all around Seattle during Seafair.

The History of Seafair

Seafair has been happening every year in Seattle since 1950. Its beginnings can be traced back to the 1911 Seattle Golden Potlatch Celebrations.

In 2020, Seafair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many public gatherings were not allowed at that time. The festival was also canceled in 2021. Organizers felt that the rules for events would not allow for a big city-wide festival like Seafair.

Fun Seafair Events

Seafair usually starts in the middle of June. Since 1949, the start of Seafair has been announced by the Seafair Pirates landing at Alki Beach.

Milk Carton Derby

Another fun early event is the Milk Carton Derby on Green Lake. This is a silly boat race where all the boats are made from empty milk cartons! Some boats are built for speed, while others are made to be as funny as possible. The Derby usually has many activities for kids and families by the lake.

Seafair Runs

In 2002, a half marathon race was added to Seafair. Three years later, a full marathon was also included. People can run or walk these races. The half marathon is about 13.1 miles (21.1 km), and the full marathon is about 26.2 miles (42.2 km). If you prefer a shorter distance, there is also a 5 km (3.1 miles) race.

From 2009, the Seafair Marathon and Half Marathon became part of the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon.

Seafair Summer Fourth

In 2013, an Independence Day fireworks show was added at Lake Union. This event is called the Seafair Summer Fourth. It took the place of an older fireworks show that used to happen at the same spot. That show had stopped because it ran out of money. Seafair brought the fireworks back with help from local sponsors.

Seafair Triathlon

The Seafair Triathlon takes place by Lake Washington at Seward Park. A triathlon is a race with three parts: swimming, biking, and running. There are two distances:

  • Sprint: A half-mile swim, a 12-mile (19 km) bike ride, and a 5 km (3.1 miles) run.
  • Olympic: A longer swim, bike, and run.

You can compete by yourself or as part of a team. The Seafair Triathlon is usually held on the third weekend of July. In 2007, a record 2,200 people took part in the Seafair Triathlon.

The Torchlight Festivities

The last weekend in July is all about the Torchlight Parade and Torchlight Run. Many local groups take part in these events, which happen on the streets of Downtown Seattle. A local woman chosen as "Miss Seafair" (before 1972, she was called "Seafair Queen") has an important role in the parade.

The parade is usually preceded by the Torchlight Run. This is a short 8 km (5 miles) race through the city streets. Many people run in fun costumes!

Seafair Weekend

One of the most popular parts of the festival is Seafair Weekend. This usually happens on the first weekend of August at Genesee Park. The main events of Seafair Weekend are hydroplane racing on the water and an aerobatics show in the sky.

Seafair Cup Hydroplane Races

The Seafair Cup is a stop on the American Boat Racing Association's unlimited hydroplane racing circuit. It takes place at Stan Sayres Memorial Park on Lake Washington. Tens of thousands of people come to watch these races. Some stand on the public shores of the lake, while others watch from boats anchored just outside the race course.

Seafair Air Show

The Seafair Air Show started in 1972. It's an amazing aerobatics show that happens at the same time as the Seafair Cup. World-class aerobatics teams perform incredible stunts in the sky over Lake Washington. The most famous performers are the US Navy Blue Angels and the US Army Golden Knights.

The Blue Angels have flown at the Air Show almost every year since it began. The aerobatics show can be a bit controversial. Some local people worry about accidents with the low-flying aircraft. Others find the noise from the jet engines annoying.

There was no air show at Seafair in 1994 and 1995. This was due to a disagreement about whether the planes could safely fly over Lake Washington. In 1996, the Blue Angels flew over Elliott Bay, west of downtown Seattle, in a separate event. However, this did not work out well financially. So, in 1997, they returned to being part of the race-weekend events over Lake Washington.

Due to government budget cuts, the Blue Angels did not perform at Seafair in 2013. The Patriots Jet Team flew instead. Since 2019, the air show's flight area was moved south. This was done to avoid closing the floating bridges that carry Interstate 90 between Mercer Island and Seattle during Seafair Weekend.

Seafair Groups

Seafair Pirates

The Seafair Pirates are a big part of Seafair. This group works all year long to entertain children in hospitals and help the community. They also do a lot of fundraising. The pirates are known for their loud and sometimes silly actions at Seafair. Some people don't like their antics, but most people who enjoy Seafair see them as an important part of the event.

Criticisms of Seafair

Even though Seafair has many different events for different people, the Blue Angels air show gets some criticism. Some residents don't like it because they feel it promotes war. Others are concerned about the use of fossil fuels and its effect on the climate.

In 2023, a survey by a local news website showed that about half of its readers "hated" Seafair. These readers lived in the part of Seattle most affected by the air show's noise. In 2025, a billboard was put up in the Rainer Beach neighborhood of Seattle. It read "Say no to the Blue Angels" and said the air show is "too loud," causes "war trauma," and creates "pollution." This billboard was put up by a group called Airshow Climate Action.
