Sleepy Hollow Lake is a special place in Greene County, New York. It is both a fun lake and a neighborhood where people live. This area is about 120 miles north of New York City and 28 miles south of Albany. It sits in the beautiful Hudson River Valley.
The lake itself is man-made, meaning it was built by people. It is about two and a half miles long and 70 feet deep. The lake is also a very important source of clean drinking water for nearby towns.
Around the lake is a large community covering 2,200 acres. This community is called "Sleepy Hollow Lake" too. It is a Planned Unit Development (PUD), which means it's a planned neighborhood. The people living there manage their own land use and take care of shared areas. These shared areas include roads, parks, and beaches. They also run most of the water and sewer services. The community even has its own security and rules enforcement.

Sleepy Hollow Lake is a man-made reservoir. This means it's an artificial lake built to store water. It covers 324 acres and is about 2.5 miles long. The deepest part of the lake is 70 feet.
The lake is a Class “A” drinking water reservoir. This means its water is clean enough to drink. It provides water to the towns nearby. The lake also has 17 miles of shoreline, perfect for enjoying the water.

The Sleepy Hollow Lake community is located across three different towns. These are the town of Coxsackie, NY, the town of Athens, NY, and the Village of Athens, NY.

There are also larger towns nearby. Catskill, NY is about 7 miles south. Kingston, NY and Rhinebeck, NY are about 30 miles south. Hudson, NY is very close, just 2.5 miles across the Hudson River. To get to Hudson by car, you cross the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, which is about 10 miles away. In the summer, you can also take a ferry across the Hudson River on Friday and Saturday evenings. Some residents use the Amtrak train station in Hudson to travel to New York City.

Sleepy Hollow Lake is a great spot for fishing! The lake is home to many different kinds of game fish. You can find largemouth bass and smallmouth bass here. There are also crappie, which are popular fish for catching.
In 2021, a very special fish was caught in Sleepy Hollow Lake. It was a white crappie that weighed 4 pounds and 7 ounces. This was a new record for the state of New York!
Birds of Sleepy Hollow Lake
Sleepy Hollow Lake is a wonderful place for bird watching. Many different types of birds live here. Some birds stay all year, while others visit during their migration.
You might see amazing birds like Bald Eagles and Peregrine Falcons. Other birds include Red Tailed Hawks, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Northern Harrier.
