The Spring Awakening Music Festival (SAMF) was a big music event held every year in Chicago. It focused on electronic dance music (EDM). The festival started small in 2008. It then moved to larger places like Soldier Field and Addams/Medill Park. In 2019, it was held at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. The festival did not happen in 2020. The 2021 event took place in October. The festival planned to return in 2022 but was later cancelled.

History of Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening began in 2008 as a series of concerts. These concerts grew very popular. By 2012, the event became a large outdoor music festival. It was held at Soldier Field in Chicago. A company called React Presents organized it.

In 2013, the festival grew even bigger. It expanded to three days. More than 90,000 people attended that year. Spring Awakening usually took place in June. The festival became very popular. Many electronic dance music fans in Chicago loved it. People started coming from all over the country to attend.

Who Organized the Festival?

React Presents is a company based in Chicago. They organize clubs, concerts, and festivals. They started in 2008. Besides Spring Awakening, React Presents also puts on other music festivals. These include the North Coast Music Festival.

Spring Awakening 2012

In 2012, SAMF became a two-day festival. It was held on June 16–17 at Soldier Field. The festival was first planned for the area around the stadium. But so many people wanted to come. So, the main stage was moved inside the stadium. It was placed at the north end zone. Over 50,000 people attended Spring Awakening in 2012.

Some of the main performers included Skrillex, Afrojack, Diplo, A-Trak, Benny Benassi, and Dillon Francis. Other artists like Moby, Flux Pavilion, and Hardwell also played.

In 2013, SAMF expanded to three days. It took place from June 14–16 at Soldier Field. This year was even more organized and larger. The festival became a huge three-day music party. Kids wore bright colors and creative outfits. They also wore expressive jewelry. Everyone came to enjoy their favorite artists' music.

With the expansion, a new stage was added. This made a total of two stages and two tents. Over 100 famous artists performed. More than 75,000 people attended the festival.

Some of the main performers included Bassnectar, Calvin Harris, Krewella, Nicky Romero, and Porter Robinson. Other popular artists like ZEDD and Zeds Dead also performed.

The third annual Spring Awakening concert was held from June 13–15, 2014. In 2014, Spring Awakening was one of the few festivals open to all ages. The festival also started a safety program. It was called SAMF Safe & Sound. This program encouraged attendees to contact security or the wellness team if they felt unsafe.

Some of the main artists included Tiesto, Pretty Lights, Diplo, Knife Party, and Kaskade. Other artists like Big Gigantic, Benny Benassi, Dillon Francis, and Eric Prydz also performed.

The 2015 SAMF took place from June 12–14, 2015, at Soldier Field. The festival featured four stages. This helped to fit more than 75 acts. SAMF also changed its age rule. The minimum age to attend became 18. This change was made to keep everyone safe. It also aimed to ensure the best experience for fans and staff.

An official spokesperson for SAMF said they believed the festival was for adults. They made this choice to promote safety. They wanted to ensure the best experience for everyone.

Some of the artists included ZEDD, Hardwell, Tiesto, Diplo, Afrojack, and Dada Life. Other performers were Excision, Flosstradamus, Martin Garrix, Zeds Dead, and Jack ü.

Spring Awakening 2016

SAMF 2016 was held from June 10–12, 2016. It had five stages. For the first time, there were two main stages. The festival hosted over 100 acts. These artists covered many different styles of electronic music.

The main stage was called the DJ Stage. It featured performances from Above & Beyond, Kaskade, The Chainsmokers, Steve Aoki, and Dillon Francis. The second main stage was called the Electronic Stage. It showed artists like Deadmau5, Zeds Dead, Jamie xx, and RL Grime.

Other stages offered a variety of music and visual displays. These included the Bass Kitchen and Trance Arena stages. In 2016, the festival moved to Addams/Medill Park. This park is in the near West side of Chicago. It was easy to reach by public transportation.

Spring Awakening 2017

The 2017 Spring Awakening was held from June 9–11. It took place at Addams/Medill Park in Chicago. This park is near Roosevelt Road and Ashland Avenue.

The lineup included famous artists like Armin van Buuren, Benny Benassi, Paul van Dyk, and Martin Garrix. There were six different stages. Performances ran from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM each day.
