Sri Mulyani Indrawati (born on August 26, 1962) is an Indonesian economist. She has been the Minister of Finance of Indonesia since 2016. She works under President Joko Widodo and Prabowo Subianto. She also held this role earlier, from 2005 to 2010, under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
During her first time as Finance Minister, she helped make Indonesia's economy stronger. She also helped the country get through the 2008 financial crisis. In 2010, she left her role to work at the World Bank as a Managing Director. She returned to Indonesia as Finance Minister in 2016.
In 2023, she was named one of the 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes magazine.

Biography
Early Life and Education
Sri Mulyani was born in Tanjung Karang (now called Bandar Lampung) in Lampung, Sumatra. This was on August 26, 1962. She is the seventh child of university lecturers. Her parents were professor Satmoko and Retno Sriningsih.
She earned a degree in Economics from the University of Indonesia in 1986. Later, she studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There, she received her Master's degree in Policy Economics in 1990. She also earned her PhD in economics in 1992.
After her studies, she worked as an expert for the Economic Planning Agency. She also directed a Master's program at the University of Indonesia. From 1998 to 2001, she taught economics at the same university. In 2001, Sri Mulyani moved to Atlanta, Georgia. She worked as a consultant for programs that helped Indonesia's independence. In 2002, she was a visiting professor at Georgia State University. From 2002 to 2004, she was an executive director at the International Monetary Fund. She represented 12 countries in Southeast Asia there.
Career
First Term as Finance Minister (2005)
Sri Mulyani became the Minister of Finance in 2005. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed her. One of her first actions was to remove many corrupt tax and customs officers. She also started changes to make the tax and customs office better. She gave higher salaries to honest tax officials. This helped them avoid taking bribes.
In 2005, Indonesia received $8.9 billion in money from other countries for businesses. This was a big increase from $4.6 billion in 2004. In 2006, Euromoney magazine named her the Euromoney Finance Minister of the Year. Emerging Markets also chose her as the Asia Finance Minister of The Year.
In 2007, Indonesia's economy grew by 6.6%. This was the highest growth rate since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. In July 2008, she also became the Coordinating Minister for the economy. This meant she oversaw many economic areas. By January 2009, Indonesia's public debt was much lower. This made it easier for the country to get money from foreign investors.
Resignation and Move to the World Bank (2010)
On May 5, 2010, Sri Mulyani was chosen as one of three managing directors of the World Bank. She was in charge of working with 74 countries. These countries were in South America, the Caribbean, Eastern Asia–Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa.
She resigned as finance minister in May 2010. Her resignation caused some concern in the financial markets. There was talk that her resignation was due to some political challenges.
On May 20, 2010, Agus Martowardojo became her replacement. He was the CEO of Bank Mandiri, Indonesia's largest bank.
Reappointment as Finance Minister (2016-Present)
In 2016, Sri Mulyani was again appointed as finance minister. From 2017 to 2019, FinanceAsia named her the best finance minister in the Asia-Pacific region for three years in a row. In 2018, Indonesia had its smallest budget deficit since 2012. A budget deficit means the government spends more money than it collects.
In February 2020, Sri Mulyani announced a large economic plan. This plan aimed to help Indonesia's economy during the COVID-19 recession. In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped Indonesia get a very long-term loan from other countries. In 2021, she also became a Vice Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency Steering Committee.
On October 20, 2024, Sri Mulyani was reappointed as Minister of Finance by President Prabowo Subianto. This is her third time holding the position. She is the first person to be Finance Minister under three different presidents.
Personal Life
Sri Mulyani married economist Tonny Sumartono in 1988. They have three children together. She is a professional economist and does not belong to any political party. Sri Mulyani sees herself as a role model for women.
