About Sri Mulyani's Life
Early Life and Education
Sri Mulyani was born on August 26, 1962. Her birthplace was Tanjung Karang, which is now called Bandar Lampung, in Lampung, Sumatra. She was the seventh child in her family. Her parents, Satmoko and Retno Sriningsih, were both university lecturers.
She studied economics at the University of Indonesia. She earned her first degree there in 1986. Later, she went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States. She earned a Master's degree in Policy Economics in 1990. Then, she completed her PhD in economics in 1992.
After her studies, she worked as an expert for the Economic Planning Agency in Indonesia. She also directed a Master's program at the University of Indonesia. From 1998 to 2001, she taught economics at the same university. In 2001, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in the US. There, she worked as a consultant to help strengthen Indonesia's local governments. In 2002, she was a visiting professor at Georgia State University. From 2002 to 2004, she served on the board of the International Monetary Fund. She represented 12 countries from Southeast Asia in this role.
Her Career Journey
First Time as Finance Minister (2005-2010)
Sri Mulyani first became Minister of Finance in 2005. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono appointed her to the position. One of her first actions was to make changes in the finance department. She worked to reduce political corruption and improve the tax and customs offices. She also increased salaries for tax officials who were honest. This helped reduce the temptation for them to accept bribes.
Her efforts helped Indonesia attract more foreign investment. In 2005, Indonesia received $8.9 billion in investments. This was a big jump from $4.6 billion in 2004.
In 2006, Euromoney magazine named her the Euromoney Finance Minister of the Year. In September 2006, another publication, Emerging Markets, chose her as the Asia Finance Minister of The Year.
In 2007, Indonesia's economy grew by 6.6%. This was the highest growth rate since the 1997 Asian financial crisis. In July 2008, she also became the Coordinating Minister for the Economy. This meant she oversaw several economic ministries.
Even during the Great Recession in 2008, Indonesia's economy grew by 6%. By January 2009, the country's public debt was much lower. It dropped from 100% of the country's total economic output in 1999 to just 30%. This made it easier for Indonesia to borrow money from investors.
Working at the World Bank (2010-2016)
On May 5, 2010, Sri Mulyani was chosen for a new role. She became one of three managing directors at the World Bank. The World Bank is a global organization that helps countries develop. In this role, she was responsible for working with 74 countries. These countries were in South America, the Caribbean, Eastern Asia–Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa.
She resigned as Indonesia's finance minister in May 2010 to take this new job. Her departure caused some concern in the financial markets. The Indonesia Stock Exchange went down, and the Indonesian rupiah currency also fell.
Return as Finance Minister (2016-Present)
In 2016, Sri Mulyani was asked to return as Indonesia's finance minister. She accepted the role. From 2017 to 2019, FinanceAsia magazine named her the best finance minister in the Asia-Pacific region for three years in a row. In 2018, Indonesia had its smallest budget deficit since 2012. A budget deficit means the government spent more money than it collected.
In February 2020, she announced a large economic support plan. This plan was designed to help Indonesia's economy during the COVID-19 recession. In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she helped Indonesia issue a special type of bond. This bond had a 50-year maturity, which was the longest loan in Indonesia's history. In 2021, she also became a Vice Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency Steering Committee.
On October 20, 2024, Sri Mulyani was reappointed as Minister of Finance by President Prabowo Subianto. This is her third time holding the position, and she will serve until 2029. This makes her the first person to be finance minister under three different presidents.
Personal Life
Sri Mulyani married economist Tonny Sumartono in 1988. They have three children together. She is a professional economist and does not belong to any political party. She sees herself as a role model for other women.
