Architecture of St Thomas' Church
What Does the Outside of the Church Look Like?
St Thomas' Church is built from a type of stone called ashlar, which means the stones are cut very smoothly. The church's style is called Gothic Revival. This style looks like the old Gothic churches from the Middle Ages.
The church has a main area called a nave with five sections. It also has side sections called aisles on the north and south. At the back, there is a chancel, which is where the altar is. There is also a tall tower at the west end.
The tower has three levels and has pointed decorations called pinnacles at its corners. The top of the tower has a wall with a pattern like castle battlements. It has a main door at the west (front) and large windows above it. There are also clock faces and openings for bells. The side aisles also have patterned walls and windows with decorative stone patterns called tracery.
What Does the Inside of the Church Look Like?
Inside the church, there are rows of arches called arcades. These arches are supported by slim pillars. There are also balconies, called galleries, on three sides of the church.
The gallery at the west end has a special carved roof, or canopy. This canopy shows the royal arms of King William IV, who was the king when the church was built. Some of the side galleries have been changed into a chapel and meeting rooms.
The chapel has beautiful stained glass windows made by a company called Hardman & Co. These windows show stories from the life of Saint Thomas, who the church is named after. The large window at the east end of the church, which was made in the 1840s, was also likely made by Hardman.
The church has a large organ with three keyboards, called manuals. It was built in 1839 by Samuel Renn and later fixed up around 1920. The church also has a set of eight bells, all made in 1906.
Churchyard and Memorials
The church has a churchyard around it. In the churchyard, there are special memorials for soldiers who died in the First World War and the Second World War.
