Stambaugh Auditorium is a special building in Youngstown, Ohio. It opened way back in 1926. A kind businessman named Henry H. Stambaugh wanted a place for people in Youngstown to enjoy shows, learn new things, and have fun. He left money in his will to build it.

The main part of Stambaugh Auditorium is the Concert Hall. It can hold 2,553 people! There are also other cool spaces inside. These include the Jeanne D. Tyler Grand Ballroom and the Anne K. Christman Memorial Hall. Outside, there's a beautiful Formal Garden. People can rent these areas for parties and other events.

History of Stambaugh Auditorium

The Henry H. Stambaugh Memorial Auditorium opened in 1926. It was a dream come true for Henry Stambaugh. He was a local leader and gave a lot to the community. He wanted the building to be a place for "enjoyment, pleasure, entertainment and education."

The Auditorium cost $1.3 million to build. That was a lot of money back then! It was designed by Harvey Wiley Corbett. He was from a famous New York firm. The building looks like a public auditorium in Springfield, Massachusetts. That building was inspired by the Pantheon in Paris, France.

The official opening was on December 5, 1926. The very next day, the Monday Musical Club held the first concert. A famous humorist named Will Rogers performed. Since then, many amazing artists have played there. These include Tony Bennett and Bob Dylan. Even Bruce Springsteen and the Cleveland Orchestra have performed on its stage.

Keeping Stambaugh Auditorium Beautiful

Stambaugh Auditorium has been updated many times. This helps keep the building in great shape. The Anne Christman Memorial Hall was fixed up in 1995. The Concert Hall was restored in 2004. Office spaces were also improved in 2004 and 2006. More parking was added over the years too.

Recently, the ballroom was renovated. The stage was also made better. All these changes help continue Henry H. Stambaugh's goal. He wanted a place for the community to enjoy and learn.

One big project was fixing the E.M. Skinner Pipe Organ. It's in the Concert Hall. The organ was old and had water damage. So, in 2009, it was taken apart. It traveled all the way to Connecticut to be repaired. The Thompson Allen Company cleaned and fixed it. They put it back together in 2011. Now, it looks and sounds just like it did in 1926. It's one of the few working E.M. Skinner organs left. People love to see it, especially on tours.

There are plans for even more updates in the future. The outside of the building will be cleaned. This will make it look like it did when it first opened. The columns and ironwork will shine again. Fixing the joints will keep out moisture. This will also help with heating and cooling. More lights will make the building look amazing at night. The big stairs on Fifth Avenue also need to be fixed.
