Stanley Greene (February 14, 1949 – May 19, 2017) was an American photojournalist. This means he took pictures to tell stories in the news. He traveled the world to capture important events.

Stanley Greene's Early Life

Stanley Greene was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1949. His parents were both actors. His father was also a union organizer. He was one of the first African Americans to be an officer in the Screen Actors Guild. His father was part of the Harlem Renaissance movement. This was a time when African American art and culture grew in Harlem.

In the 1950s, Stanley's father was unfairly listed as a Communist. This meant he had trouble finding work. He had to take small, uncredited parts in movies. Stanley's parents gave him his first camera when he was eleven years old.

Starting His Art Journey

Stanley Greene first wanted to be a painter. He started taking photos to help him with his paintings. In 1971, he was part of the movement against the Vietnam War. He was also a member of the Black Panther Party. A friend, photographer W. Eugene Smith, encouraged him to study photography. Stanley studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He also studied at the San Francisco Art Institute.

Stanley worked many different jobs as a photographer. He took pictures of rock bands. He also worked for a newspaper called Newsday. In 1986, he took fashion photos in Paris.

Becoming a Photojournalist

Stanley Greene started his career as a photojournalist in 1989. He took a famous picture of a girl in a ballet tutu with a champagne bottle. This photo became a symbol of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

In 1993, he was working in Moscow. He was caught in a dangerous situation during a political stand-off. He covered many countries affected by war. These included Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Iraq, Somalia, Croatia, Kashmir, and Lebanon.

Documenting Major Events

Stanley Greene took pictures of the terrible genocide in Rwanda in 1994. He also photographed the US Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. His photos showed the suffering of people in these events.

After 1994, he became well-known for his work in Chechnya. This was a conflict between rebels and the Russian army. His photos were put into a book called Open Wound in 2004. These pictures showed the pain of Chechnya's long fight for independence from Russia.

Later Life and Legacy

In 2007, Stanley Greene helped start the NOOR photo agency. He launched it with his colleague Kadir van Lohuizen. They started their agency on September 7, 2007.

Stanley Greene passed away in Paris in 2017. He was 68 years old. His work helped the world see and understand important events. He showed the human side of conflicts and disasters.
