History of Starbuck Town
Starbuck was named after a railroad official named W. H. Starbuck. The town began as a meeting point for the main train line of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company.
The town's layout was planned in 1894. Ten years later, in 1904, its first bank was built. In 1886, the railroad finished a line that went east from Starbuck to Pomeroy and Pataha City. This train line was used until 1981.
Starbuck officially became a town on September 18, 1905. A large brick school was built in 1910.
Changes in Transportation and Economy
In 1914, a bridge was finished over the Snake River. This bridge was built downstream from Lyon's Ferry. It meant that fewer trains traveled through Starbuck.
Because of this, the town's economy changed. It started to focus more on farming. However, in 1929, the town's bank closed down. The number of people living in Starbuck slowly became smaller until the middle of the 1900s.
The high school in Starbuck closed in 1956. After that, students had to take buses to Dayton for school. The train station also closed in 1961.
Modern Developments
In 1968, a bridge called the Snake River Bridge was put back together in the area. This bridge was first built over the Columbia River in Vantage in 1927. It was taken apart in 1963 and then rebuilt near Starbuck. This made it easier to cross the Snake River.
In 1970, the Little Goose Dam was finished. It is about nine miles northeast of Starbuck. Today, Starbuck is a quiet town focused on agriculture. Its population is around 130 people.
