Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born in Forest Gate, London, Steel Banglez grew up in the Newham area. He was raised in a Sikh family and was always around music. His mother was a music teacher, so their home was filled with traditional Indian instruments like harmoniums and tablas.
When he was just 10 years old, he started DJing jungle music with his brothers. He even had his own show on a pirate radio station called Mystic FM. As a teenager, a teacher showed him a music-making program called Fruity Loops. He quickly learned how to use it and produced his first track, "Dreams," for his neighbor, the grime artist D Double E.
However, his music career had to be put on hold when he was 17. He made some serious mistakes that led to him spending three years away from his music.
Music Career
Starting Out as a Producer
After his break, Steel Banglez focused on making rap music. He had made friends with other rappers and started producing beats for them. He began to get noticed in the London rap scene. Some of his early work included producing "Colours" by D Double E and a freestyle for Big H.
He started working with more artists on tracks like "Breakdown" and "Go Down South." To build his name as a producer, he set up a studio in his manager's house. He let artists use the studio for free, and big names like Wiley and Roll Deep recorded vocals over his beats.
Later, he moved to a professional studio and worked with artists like Yungen and Krept and Konan. In 2014, he was working on an album for an artist named Cashtastic. Unfortunately, the project had to be stopped, which was a very difficult time for Steel Banglez.
Becoming a Solo Star
In 2015, Steel Banglez felt inspired again after hearing the song "No Buddy" by MoStack. He contacted him on Twitter, and they started working together. This led to Steel Banglez producing MoStack's first mixtape, Gangster with Banter.
Around the same time, he discovered the rapper MIST from Birmingham. He liked how MIST used words from the Punjabi language in his songs. Steel Banglez knew this would help him connect with a wider audience. He produced MIST's breakthrough EP, M I S T to the T, in 2016. He also worked with J Hus on the popular track "Fisherman."
Soon, Steel Banglez's own career as a lead artist took off. In 2017, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. He released the song "Money," which featured many of his friends and collaborators. His next single, "Bad," was a huge hit. It climbed the UK Singles Chart and peaked at number 29. The song was certified Platinum, meaning it sold over 600,000 copies.
In 2017, he won Producer of the Year at the GRM Daily Rated Awards. He also won Best Non-Traditional Asian Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in both 2018 and 2019.
On May 19, 2023, he released his first studio album, The Playlist. It features many famous artists and reached number 29 on the UK Albums Chart.
Personal Life
Steel Banglez's success has allowed him to support his family. He helped his mother retire and paid for his sister's university education.
His nickname, Steel Banglez, was given to him by a Jamaican friend. It refers to the steel bracelets, called karas, that he wears as part of his Sikh faith. He is also a big fan of the West Ham United F.C. football team.
