Early Life and Music Start
Growing Up in London
Pahuldip Sandhu grew up in Forest Gate, East London. His family followed the Sikh religion. His mother was a music teacher, so he was always around traditional Indian instruments. These included harmoniums and tabla drums.
Besides his Indian Punjabi background, Sandhu also has family roots from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
First Steps in Music
When he was 10, Steel Banglez started DJing jungle music with his brothers. He even had a show on a pirate radio station called Mystic FM. In his early teens, a teacher showed him a music program called Fruity Loops (now FL Studio). This is where he learned to make beats.
His first song, "Dreams," was for his neighbor, a grime artist named D Double E. He also produced a freestyle for Big H, which helped him get noticed.
Steel Banglez faced a difficult time when he was 17. He spent three years in prison, which paused his music career.
Music Career Journey
Early Production Work (2005–2014)
After his release, Steel Banglez focused on making rap music. He started getting attention in South London, where the city's rap scene was growing. Some of his first production jobs were in the mid-2000s. He produced "Colours" for D Double E and a freestyle for Big H.
He worked with artists like Ghetts on "Tidal Wave." He also made songs with Big H, P Money, Wiley, Krept and Konan, Chip, and Yungen.
To show off his skills, Steel Banglez set up a home studio. He offered free studio time to artists. Even famous names like Wiley and Roll Deep recorded there. Later, he moved to a professional studio. In 2014, he planned to produce an album for Cashtastic. However, this project stopped when Cashtastic had to leave the UK. This made Steel Banglez feel sad and lost.
Solo Success and More Production (2015–Present)
Steel Banglez found new inspiration in 2015 when he heard a song by MoStack. They connected online, and Steel Banglez produced MoStack's first mixtape, Gangster with Banter. He also discovered MIST, a rapper from Birmingham, and loved how MIST used Punjabi words in his music.
Steel Banglez drove MIST to his London studio and played him the beat for "Karlas Back." He produced MIST's first big EP, M I S T to the T, in 2016. He also helped create MIST's 2018 album, Diamond in the Dirt. This album featured artists like MoStack and Jessie Ware. He also worked with Jae5 on "Fisherman" for J Hus's album Common Sense.
Steel Banglez also started his own music career. He signed deals with Warner/Chappell Music and Warner Bros. Records in 2017. He also started his own music label, Gifted Music.
His song "Money" came out in 2017, featuring friends like MoStack, MIST, and Abra Cadabra. His next song, "Bad," with Yungen, MoStack, Mr Eazi, and Not3s, became a hit. It reached number 29 on the UK Singles Chart in 2018. The song was later certified Silver for selling over 200,000 copies.
Steel Banglez won Producer of the Year at the GRM Daily's Rated Awards in 2017. He also won Best Non-Traditional Asian Act at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards in 2018 and 2019.
On May 19, 2023, he released his first studio album, The Playlist. It featured many artists like Giggs, Aitch, Tion Wayne, and Burna Boy. The album reached number 29 on the UK Albums Chart.
Personal Life
Steel Banglez's music success has allowed him to help his family. He helped his mother retire and paid for his sister's university studies. His nickname, Steel Banglez, came from a Jamaican friend. It refers to the karas, which are steel bracelets he wears as a Sikh.
