Stephen Paul Fleming ONZM (born 1 April 1973) is a famous cricket coach and former captain of the New Zealand national cricket team. He was a left-handed opening batter. He also sometimes bowled with his right arm. Stephen is New Zealand's second-most experienced Test cricket player. He played in 111 Test matches.

He was also the team's longest-serving and most successful captain. He led the team to 28 Test victories. He also helped New Zealand win the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy. This was the team's first trophy from the International Cricket Council. Fleming was the captain for the very first Twenty20 International match in 2005. This game was against Australia.

Stephen retired from playing international cricket on 26 March 2008. He played in the first season of the Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings. He then became the team's coach in 2009. He is still their head coach today. He has coached them to win five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles. He also coaches other Super Kings teams. These include Joburg Super Kings and Texas Super Kings. He was also a coach for Melbourne Stars from 2015 to 2019. Stephen Fleming was given a special award in 2011. He became an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his great work in cricket.

Early Life and Family

Stephen Fleming was born on 1 April 1973. He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. His mother's name is Pauline Fleming. He grew up with his mother.

On 9 May 2007, Stephen married his partner, Kelly Payne. They got married in Wellington. The couple has a daughter, who was born in 2006.

Playing for Clubs

Stephen Fleming played for different cricket clubs in England. These clubs included Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire. He was the captain for Nottinghamshire. He led them to win the County Championship in 2005. This was their first championship win in 18 years.

International Cricket Career

Stephen Fleming was a left-handed batsman. He played his first Test match in March 1994. This was against India. He was named the "Man of the Match" in his first game. He scored 92 runs in that match. He played his first ODI match on 25 March 1994. He scored 90 runs without being out in that game.

In 1997, he scored his first Test century. This happened in Auckland. He became New Zealand's youngest captain at 23 years old. He took over the captaincy from Lee Germon. He led the New Zealand team to win a bronze medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games. This was for cricket.

Fleming led his team to win the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy. This was a very important win. It was New Zealand's first trophy from the ICC. In September 2000, Fleming became New Zealand's most successful Test captain. He won his 12th match as captain against Zimbabwe. He ended his captaincy with 28 Test wins. This is the most by any New Zealand captain.

In the 2003 Cricket World Cup, Fleming scored his best ODI score. He made 134 runs without being out. This helped New Zealand beat South Africa. In February 2005, Fleming captained New Zealand in the first ever Twenty20 International. This historic match was against Australia. In April 2006, he scored his third Test double-century. He was the first New Zealander to do this.

On 25 October 2006, Fleming captained his country for the 194th time in an ODI. He passed Arjuna Ranatunga for most matches as a captain. He finished with 218 games as captain. This record has only been beaten by Ricky Ponting. He captained the team in the 2007 Cricket World Cup. He scored 353 runs and led the team to the semi-finals.

On 24 April 2007, Fleming stepped down as captain. This was after New Zealand lost to Sri Lanka in the semi-finals. In September 2007, Daniel Vettori took over as captain. Fleming announced his retirement from the New Zealand team in March 2008. He wanted to spend more time with his family. He also wanted to play in the Indian Premier League. Fleming scored over 7000 runs in Test cricket. He also took over 170 catches. This is the third highest for a non-wicket keeper.

IPL Playing Career

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bought Stephen Fleming for US$350,000. This was for the first season of the Indian Premier League in 2008. He played for only one season. He scored 196 runs in ten matches. CSK finished as the runners-up that year.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Fleming became the head coach of Chennai Super Kings in 2009. Under his coaching, CSK won the 2010 Indian Premier League season. They also qualified for the Champions League Twenty20. Chennai won the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 title.

Fleming coached CSK to win their second IPL title in 2011. They also won their second Champions League Twenty20 title in 2014. In 2016, CSK was suspended for two years. Fleming then coached Rising Pune Supergiants.

He returned to Chennai Super Kings for the 2018 season. Fleming coached CSK to win their third IPL title in 2018. He led CSK to win the title again in 2021 and 2023. CSK has become the most successful IPL team under his coaching. They have five title wins and ten final appearances. He also coaches other Super Kings teams. These include Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket.

Playing Style

Stephen Fleming was a very graceful left-handed batter. He was known for his elegant shots. These included the flick off the pads, straight drive, cover drive, and cut shots. He was also excellent at catching balls in the slips. He was especially known for his captaincy skills. Famous cricketer Shane Warne called him the "best captain in world cricket."
