In 1997, during England's tour of New Zealand, he scored his first Test century (100 runs) in Auckland. In the third Test of that series, he became New Zealand's youngest captain ever. He was only 23 years and 321 days old. He led the New Zealand team to win a bronze medal in cricket at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.
Fleming led the team to win the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy. This was a huge achievement, as it was New Zealand's first major trophy from the ICC. In September 2000, he became New Zealand's most successful Test captain. He achieved his 12th win as captain against Zimbabwe, passing Geoff Howarth's record. Fleming officially retired from the New Zealand team in March 2008. He wanted to spend more time with his family and play in the Indian Premier League.
