The Stillwater River is a river in western Ohio, United States. It flows for about 69 miles (111 kilometers). This river is a tributary, which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Stillwater River flows into the Great Miami River.
Together with the Great Miami and Ohio rivers, the Stillwater River is part of the huge Mississippi River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river system.
Where Does the Stillwater River Start and End?
The Stillwater River begins close to the Indiana state line. This is in the western part of Darke County. It starts about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Greenville.
The river then flows towards the east-southeast. It meets another river called Greenville Creek in Covington. This meeting point is about 5 miles (8 km) west of Piqua.
After Covington, the river continues south past Englewood. Here, a dam has been built on the river. This dam helps to control floods, stopping the river from overflowing its banks. Finally, the Stillwater River flows southeast to join the Great Miami River in Dayton.
Why Is It Called Stillwater River?
The Stillwater River got its name because its current is quite slow. It doesn't flow very fast, making its waters seem "still."
This river was one of the many rivers that caused a huge flood in 1913. This event was known as the Great Dayton Flood. It led to the creation of the Miami Conservancy District. This group was formed to help manage the rivers and prevent future floods in the area.
