Stoney 142, 143, 144 is a special area of land in southwest Alberta, Canada. It is known as an Indian reserve. This land is home to three important First Nations groups: the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Wesley peoples. They are all part of the larger Nakoda nation.

This community stretches out on both sides of the Trans-Canada Highway. It is located east of Banff National Park and north of the Kananaskis Improvement District. The reserve also shares borders with other areas like Bighorn No. 8, Rocky View County, and the town of Cochrane.

Stoney 142, 143, 144 is very large. In fact, it is the third-largest Indian reserve in all of Canada by land size. Only Blood 148 and Siksika 146, which are also in Alberta, are bigger.

Many famous movies have been filmed on the Stoney Reserve.

  • The film Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson was mostly shot here. An actor named Frank "Sitting Wind" Kaquitts played Sitting Bull in the movie. He was also the first chief of Alberta's Nakoda (Stoney) First Nation. This happened after three smaller groups joined together.
  • Another movie, Open Range, starring Kevin Costner, was also filmed on the reserve.
  • The movie Little Big Man, with Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George, was filmed here too. The first showing of this movie was held in Calgary so the Stoney tribe could attend.

The 2013 Flood

In June 2013, the Stoney Reserve was hit by a very big flood. This flood caused a lot of damage. Hundreds of people living on the reserve had to leave their homes for safety.
