Stratford is a small town located in Fulton County, New York. In 2010, about 610 people lived there. It's in the northwest part of Fulton County, not too far from the village of Dolgeville. The town got its name from Stratford, Connecticut.

History of Stratford
Stratford's land was originally part of large grants given out before the American Revolution. Some of it even belonged to a famous person named Sir William Johnson.
Around the year 1800, people from Connecticut started to settle here. The town of Stratford was officially created in 1805. Back then, it was part of Montgomery County.
Later, in 1842, a piece of Stratford was used to help create a new town called Caroga. In 1810, only 353 people lived in Stratford.
Famous People from Stratford
- Adolphus C. Bartlett (1844-1922): He was a successful American businessman. He also gave a lot of money to good causes, which is called being a philanthropist.
- Harmon L. Remmel (1852-1927): He was a politician and businessman from Germany who moved to America.
Geography and Location
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Stratford covers about 198.6 square kilometers (76.7 square miles). Most of this area, about 193.9 square kilometers (74.9 square miles), is land. The rest, 4.6 square kilometers (1.8 square miles), is water.
The northern border of Stratford touches Hamilton County. The western border is next to Herkimer County. Part of this western border follows a stream called East Canada Creek. The town is also located inside the beautiful Adirondack Park.
New York State Route 29A is an important road that runs east to west through Stratford.

- Ayers Creek – This is a stream that flows into the East Canada Creek near Stratford village.
- Ayers Lake – A lake located north of Pleasant Lake.
- Bliss Corner – A small community (called a hamlet) southeast of Stratford village. It was named after one of the first people to settle there.
- Emmonsburg – Another hamlet on the western edge of town, by the East Canada Creek. It used to be known as "Hart's Bridge" or "Whitesburg."
- Knappville – A hamlet located north of Stratford village.
- Middle Sprite – A hamlet on the southern border of the town. It gets its name from Middle Sprite Creek.
- Oregon – A hamlet in the northwest part of the town, north of Knappville.
- Pleasant Lake – A lake in the eastern part of the town, north of NY-29A.
- Spectacle Lake – A lake with an unusual shape near the northern town line.
- Stewart Landing – A hamlet in the southeast part of the town.
- Stratford – This is the main hamlet of Stratford. It's located on the western town line along NY-29A. Part of this community is actually in the town of Salisbury in Herkimer County. It was once called "Deveraux" and "Nicholsville."
