Su Yu-chang (Chinese: 蘇昱彰; pinyin: Sū Yùzhāng; born June 24, 1940 – died April 29, 2019) was a famous martial artist from Taiwan. He was also a scholar and a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine.

Su Yu-chang spent his life teaching kung fu, traditional Chinese philosophy, and Chinese medicine to people all over the world.

Life and Adventures

Su Yu-chang's father, Su Cheng-sheng, was part of the well-known Taiwanese Kano baseball team. Su Yu-chang began learning Kung Fu when he was just eight years old. His first teacher was Master Chang Tekuei, who taught him styles like Mizong Quan and Pimen Tanglang Quan (a type of Praying Mantis kung fu).

After learning from other great masters, Su Yu-chang became a student of Liu Yunqiao in 1963. Liu Yunqiao started the Wutan Center for the Promotion of Chinese Wushu. Su Yu-chang helped this center grow internationally. He created the Pachi Tanglang Martial Arts Institute, which now has schools all over the world.

Teaching Around the World

In 1976, Su Yu-chang moved to Caracas, Venezuela. There, he started his own traditional Chinese medicine practice. He also began teaching different styles of kung fu. He first taught with another master, Dai Shizhe, at a school called La danza del dragón. Later, he opened his own school, the Instituto Pachimen. During this time, he was also a vice-president for the South American Martial Arts Federation.

In 1989, Master Su traveled to Mallorca, Spain. He opened the first European branch of his institute there. It was renamed the Pachi Tanglang Martial Arts Institute. Soon after, another school opened in Barcelona. In 1992, Master Su was even hired to train special security teams for the Olympic Games in Barcelona!

Over the next few years, more schools opened in cities like Tokyo, New York, and countries such as the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK. Master Su would travel around the world to visit these schools. He wanted to make sure his vast knowledge of martial arts was passed on to future generations.

Later Years

Later in his life, Su Yu-chang returned to his home country, Taiwan. He helped strengthen the schools in Taipei and Kaohsiung. From Taiwan, he continued to travel and teach. He passed away in April 2019, in La Palma, Canary Islands.

His Works

Master Su wrote several popular books about martial arts. These books were often put together from his lessons, which were taught in Spanish, Japanese, and English. He also made many video recordings. These videos showed his teachings on styles like Bagua Quan, Baji Quan, and different types of Praying Mantis kung fu.
