Sumoto (洲本市, Sumoto-shi) is a city in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It is located on Awaji Island. As of June 1, 2022, about 42,094 people lived there. The city covers an area of 182.38 square kilometers.

Sumoto is right in the middle of Awaji Island. It sits between the cities of Awaji and Minamiawaji. To the west, you'll find the Harima Gulf, which is part of the Seto Inland Sea. To the east is Osaka Bay. The Sumoto River flows through the city and into Osaka Bay. Some parts of Sumoto are even inside the beautiful Setonaikai National Park.

A Look at Sumoto's Past
Sumoto has a long history. It was once part of an old area called Awaji Province. The city grew up around Sumoto Castle, which was built during the Muromachi period. For a long time, it was part of the Tokushima Domain. Sumoto officially became a town on April 1, 1889. Later, on February 11, 1940, it became a city. In 2006, the town of Goshiki joined Sumoto.

Sumoto's economy is mostly based on farming and commercial fishing. The city is well-known for its special products. These include Awaji onions, Naruto oranges, and even Kobe Beef.
