Suresh Raina is a famous Indian former international cricketer. He was born on November 27, 1986. He sometimes led the Indian men's national cricket team. He also captained the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL when the main captain, MS Dhoni, was not available.
Raina played for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket. He is known as an aggressive left-handed middle-order batsman. He also bowled occasionally as an off-spin bowler. He was one of the youngest players to ever captain India.
He was the captain of Gujarat Lions in the IPL. He also served as the vice-captain of the Chennai Super Kings. Suresh Raina made history by being the first Indian batsman to score a century (100 runs) in all three types of international cricket games. During his time with the Indian team, he helped them win the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
Raina was also the first Indian to score a century in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He achieved this with 101 runs against South Africa in the 2010 Tournament. On August 15, 2020, Raina announced he was retiring from all international cricket. Later, on September 6, 2022, he retired from all forms of cricket, including IPL and domestic games.

Early Life and Cricket Beginnings
Suresh Raina was born on November 27, 1986. His family is from Kashmir. They moved from Rainawari in Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s. They settled in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
Raina's father, Trilokchand Raina, was a military officer. His mother, Parvesh Raina, was a housewife. Suresh Raina went to a boarding school. In 1998, he moved to Lucknow to attend Guru Gobind Singh Sports College. This is where he trained to become a cricketer.
Domestic Cricket Journey
Raina quickly became the captain of the Uttar Pradesh Under-16 team. He caught the attention of Indian selectors in 2002. He was chosen for the Under-19 tour to England at just 15 and a half years old. There, he scored two half-centuries in the Under-19 Test matches. He also toured Sri Lanka with the Under-17 team that same year.
He played his first Ranji Trophy game for Uttar Pradesh in February 2003. He was only 16 years old. He also played in List A games. In late 2003, he went to Pakistan for the Under-19 Asian ODI Championship. He was then picked for the 2004 Under-19 World Cup. He scored three half-centuries in this tournament. One of his best innings was 90 runs scored in just 38 balls.
Indian Premier League (IPL) Highlights
Suresh Raina has had an amazing career in the IPL. He was known for his excellent fielding skills. The BCCI even named him the "best fielder" before the IPL 2010 finals.
In that 2010 final, he scored a very important half-century. This helped Chennai Super Kings win the championship against the Mumbai Indians. His strong performances continued. In 2013, he was named in the ESPNcricinfo CLT20 XI, which is a team of top players.
On May 30, 2014, Raina scored an incredible 87 runs from only 25 balls. This happened against Kings XI Punjab in a qualifier match. He almost scored the fastest century in cricket history but was run out. He was again named in the ESPNcricinfo IPL XI and CLT20 XI for his great play in 2014.
In 2016, Raina joined the Gujarat Lions team. This happened because his previous team, CSK, was suspended. He became the captain of the Gujarat Lions. He continued to bat well, scoring 399 runs in 15 games. Raina missed his first-ever IPL match in nine seasons that year. He had to leave to be with his family for the birth of his first child.
To celebrate 10 years of IPL, he was chosen for the all-time ESPNcricinfo IPL XI. In IPL 2018, CSK brought Raina back to their team. On March 23, 2019, he made history. He became the first batsman to score 5000 runs in the IPL. This happened in the first match of the 12th IPL season against RCB.
In 2020, Raina traveled to the UAE for the IPL season. However, he returned to India and left the tournament for personal reasons. In 2021, he became the fourth player in IPL history to play 200 matches. Only MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Dinesh Karthik had done this before him. In the 2022 IPL Auctions, no team bought him. In September 2022, Suresh Raina joined the Road Safety World Series league. He played for the 'Indian Legends' team. In 2023, he was chosen to be the captain of Urbanrisers Hyderabad in the Legends League Cricket. His team reached the finals of the tournament.
International Cricket Career
Suresh Raina was known as one of the best fielders in the Indian team during his playing days. He usually batted in the middle order. In the semi-final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Raina scored an unbeaten 36 runs. This was a very important contribution to India's total score of 260. India went on to win the World Cup.
In 2011, India toured West Indies. Captain MS Dhoni was resting, and vice-captain Virender Sehwag was injured. Gautam Gambhir was named captain, with Raina as his deputy. But Gambhir also got injured, so Raina became the captain. Harbhajan Singh was his deputy.
During the 2014 Bangladesh series, Raina led his team to a 2–0 victory. In the second match, India was bowled out for only 105 runs. However, Suresh Raina and his team successfully defended this low score. They won the match by 47 runs.
Raina returned to the Indian T20 international team in February 2018. He had performed well in domestic cricket, especially in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was part of the Indian T20I squad that played against South Africa. In the final T20I, he scored 43 runs off 27 balls. This helped India set a good total. He also took 1 wicket for 27 runs in 3 overs. He was named the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
On August 15, 2020, Suresh Raina announced his retirement from all international cricket. This announcement came just minutes after Mahendra Singh Dhoni also retired. Playing Style and Fielding Skills
Suresh Raina is an attacking left-handed batsman. He usually bats in the middle order. He had more success in limited-overs cricket than in Test matches. He is known for his strong shots on the leg side. These include the flick, pull, and slog sweep. He also likes to hit the ball inside-out on the off side by creating space for himself.
Raina was also an amazing fielder. He was known for being quick, having sharp reflexes, and throwing the ball accurately. He often fielded close to the batsman, saving runs and making important run-outs. Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes even ranked Suresh Raina as the number one fielder on his list of top fielders.
Personal Life
Suresh Raina's family moved from Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s. They settled in Muradnagar town, Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Trilokchand Raina, was a military officer. Suresh Raina has a sister, and his elder brother is in the Indian Army.
Raina married Priyanka on April 3, 2015. They have two children. In 2020, Raina withdrew from the IPL season. This was because his uncle, Ashok Kumar, was attacked during a robbery in their house in Punjab and sadly did not survive. Raina wanted to be with his family during that difficult time.
On August 5, 2022, Raina received an honorary doctorate from Vels University. On July 12, 2023, he opened his own Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. He serves authentic Indian food there.

Suresh Raina holds many impressive records in cricket:
- He was the first Indian player to score 6000 and then 8000 runs in his Twenty20 career.
