Suresh Raina (born 27 November 1986) is a famous former cricket player from India. He was a left-handed batsman who often batted in the middle of the order. He could also bowl off-spin sometimes.

Raina was known for his strong hitting and amazing fielding skills. He even captained the Indian team sometimes when the main captain was not available. He also led the Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was vice-captain for the Chennai Super Kings.

Suresh Raina made history by being the first Indian batsman to score a century (100 runs) in all three types of international cricket games: Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I). He was part of the Indian team that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

He announced his retirement from international cricket on 15 August 2020. Later, on 6 September 2022, he retired from all forms of cricket, including the IPL and domestic games.

Early Life and Cricket Start

Suresh Raina was born on 27 November 1986 in Muradnagar, Uttar Pradesh. His family originally came from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. They moved from there in the 1990s.

His father, Trilokchand Raina, was a military officer. His mother, Parvesh Raina, was a homemaker. Suresh went to a boarding school and then moved to Lucknow in 1998. There, he joined the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College to train in cricket.

Domestic Cricket Journey

Raina quickly became a leader in cricket. He was made captain of the Uttar Pradesh Under-16 team. In 2002, when he was just 15 and a half years old, he was chosen to tour England with the Under-19 team. He scored two half-centuries there.

He played his first major domestic game, known as a Ranji Trophy match, for Uttar Pradesh in February 2003. He was only 16 at the time. He also played for various other teams like India Green and India Under-19.

In 2004, he played in the Under-19 World Cup. He scored three half-centuries, including a very fast 90 runs off just 38 balls. He later trained at the Australian Cricket Academy.

Indian Premier League Highlights

Suresh Raina is a legend in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He played for the Chennai Super Kings for many years. He was often called "Mr. IPL" because of his amazing performances.

In the IPL 2010 final, he scored a crucial half-century. This helped Chennai Super Kings win the championship. The BCCI even named him the "best fielder" that year.

In 2014, he almost scored the fastest century in cricket history. He made 87 runs off only 25 balls in a playoff match. He was run out, missing the century by just 13 runs.

When Chennai Super Kings were suspended for two years, Raina joined the Gujarat Lions in 2016. He captained the team and continued to score many runs. He played consistently, scoring 399 runs in 15 games.

In IPL 2018, he returned to the Chennai Super Kings. He was one of the key players they kept. On 23 March 2019, he became the first batsman to score 5,000 runs in the IPL.

In 2020, Raina traveled to the UAE for the IPL season. However, he returned to India due to a personal family situation. He did not play in the 2020 season.

In 2021, Raina reached another milestone. He became the fourth player in IPL history to play 200 matches. After the 2021 season, he was not picked by any team in the 2022 IPL Auctions. He then became a commentator for the tournament.

Other Cricket Leagues

After retiring from all forms of cricket in September 2022, Raina joined the Deccan Gladiators for the Abu Dhabi T10 league. He played in 7 matches for them.

In 2023, he was chosen to captain the Urbanrisers Hyderabad team in the Legends League Cricket. His team reached the finals of the tournament.

International Cricket Career

Raina was known as one of the best fielders in the Indian team during his playing days. He usually batted in the middle order.

In the semi-final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, Raina scored an unbeaten 36 runs. This was a very important contribution to India's total score, helping them win the match. India went on to win the World Cup that year.

He also played a great innings of 65 runs off 45 balls against Sri Lanka in 2012, which helped India win a match. He was named the man of the match for this performance.

Raina captained the Indian team in some matches. In 2014, he led India to a 2–0 series victory against Bangladesh. In one match, India scored only 105 runs, but Raina and his team successfully defended this low score, winning by 47 runs.

In February 2018, Raina made a comeback to the Indian T20 International team. He played well against South Africa, scoring 43 runs off 27 balls and taking a wicket. He was given the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance.

Suresh Raina announced his retirement from all international cricket on 15 August 2020. He made the announcement shortly after his good friend and former captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, also retired.

Suresh Raina was an attacking left-handed batsman. He was very successful in limited-overs cricket, like ODIs and T20s. He was known for hitting the ball hard, especially on the leg side. He used shots like the flick, pull, and slog sweep.

He was also an amazing fielder. He was very quick and had excellent reflexes. He could save many runs and make important run-outs. Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes, who is considered one of the best fielders ever, even ranked Suresh Raina as number one on his list of top fielders.

Personal Life

Suresh Raina's family moved from Jammu and Kashmir to Muradnagar in Uttar Pradesh in the 1990s. He trained at the Guru Gobind Singh Sports College in Lucknow. He has a sister, and his elder brother serves in the Indian Army.

Raina married Priyanka on 3 April 2015. They have two children.

In 2020, Raina withdrew from the IPL season to be with his family during a difficult personal situation.

On 5 August 2022, Raina received an honorary doctorate from Vels University. In July 2023, he opened his own Indian restaurant in Amsterdam.

Achievements and Records

Suresh Raina holds many impressive records in cricket:

  • He was the first Indian player to score 6,000 and then 8,000 runs in his Twenty20 career.
  • He is the first Indian player to score a century in International T20 matches and in the Champions League Twenty20.

  • He holds the record for the most runs scored in the powerplay in an IPL match.
