TV5 Network Inc. is a big media company in the Philippines. It's often just called TV5. Its main office is in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila. TV5 works mostly in radio and television. It also owns many other companies that do different things in media.

TV5 is owned by MediaQuest Holdings. This company is part of PLDT, which is a large phone company in the Philippines. PLDT's pension fund for its employees manages MediaQuest Holdings. The company is currently led by Manuel V. Pangilinan.

TV5 runs several media channels. These include three TV networks: TV5, One Sports, and RPTV. It also has a national radio station called 105.9 True FM and other True FM stations in different parts of the country. TV5 also has international TV channels like Kapatid and AksyonTV International. The company also manages Sulit TV, which provides digital TV services. Other parts of TV5 include Media5, which handles sales, and MQ Artists Agency, which helps develop new talent. TV5 also has many online platforms like TV5.com.ph and News5 Digital.

The Story of TV5

How ABC Started (1960-1972)

The story of TV5 began on June 19, 1960. A man named Chino Roces, who owned The Manila Times newspaper, was given permission by the government to start a radio and TV station. He created a company called Associated Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

In July 1962, ABC launched its TV Channel 5. It was the seventh TV network in the Philippines. ABC ran its radio and TV services until September 23, 1972. On that day, the President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, declared martial law. This meant the government took control of many things. Because of this, ABC and The Manila Times were both shut down.

Coming Back After the Revolution (1990-2003)

After some years, a group of new owners, led by Edward Tan and Chino Roces' son Edgardo, worked to bring the network back. They got permission to restart the company, now called Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC).

In 1990, ABC built new studios and a tall transmitter tower in Quezon City. They started testing their broadcasts in late 1991. On February 21, 1992, the network officially returned to the air. They also launched a radio station called Kool 106.

In October 2003, a businessman named Antonio "Tonyboy" O. Cojuangco Jr. bought ABC.

Becoming TV5 (2003-2009)

In 2005, ABC won an award for being an "Outstanding TV Station." Many of its shows also won awards.

In 2007, ABC made some changes to save money. This meant some people working in the news department lost their jobs.

In 2008, ABC-5 changed its name to TV5. This happened because it partnered with a company from Malaysia called Media Prima. This partnership helped TV5 become more popular and its viewership grew a lot.

New Ownership and Growth (2009-2016)

In October 2009, Media Prima decided to sell its part of TV5. The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) bought it through its media company, MediaQuest Holdings, Inc.. PLDT had wanted to buy ABC for a long time. The deal was finished on March 2, 2010.

On April 4, 2010, TV5 changed its look and shows. It started calling itself the "Kapatid" network, which means "sibling" network.

In October 2010, TV5 also started managing the stations of Nation Broadcasting Corporation, which is another company owned by MediaQuest. One of these stations, DWFM, became a news radio station called Radyo5 92.3 NewsFM. Another station, DWNB-TV, became AksyonTV, a news channel.

In June 2011, TV5's sports division, Sports5, started working with another TV company, Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC). They produced sports shows for IBC under the name AKTV.

TV5 also launched international channels, Kapatid TV5 and AksyonTV International, in April 2011. These channels could be watched in many parts of the world. TV5 also started expanding into social media with websites like Kristn.com and Balut Radio, which are no longer active.

By December 23, 2013, TV5 moved its main offices and studios to a new, bigger building called the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong. This new center also houses other related companies like Cignal Digital TV.

In 2015, the company officially changed its name from ABC Development Corporation to TV5 Network, Inc. It also launched Digital5, which creates online shows and content.

TV5 Network, Inc. and Cignal TV also worked with Viva Communications to create an entertainment channel called the Sari-Sari Channel in August 2015. This channel showed programs and movies from both companies. However, this partnership ended in June 2016.

In October 2016, Chot Reyes became the new head of TV5. The network also changed its focus. It started showing more American TV shows and movies dubbed in Filipino. It also worked with filmmaker Brillante Mendoza to create TV films and series.

In February 2018, TV5 launched a new slogan, "Get It on 5!". It also started a new plan with five main brands: News5 (for news), ESPN5 (for sports), On5 (for entertainment), D5 Studio (for digital content), and Studio5 (for films and original shows). TV5 also made a deal with Netflix to stream its action series Amo.

In April 2019, TV5 Network was given permission to operate for another 25 years by the government.

In August 2020, TV5 Network announced a partnership with its sister company, Cignal TV. Cignal TV became the main provider of shows for TV5. This showed that TV5 wanted to compete more strongly with other TV networks in the Philippines. In 2021, TV5 also made a deal with ABS-CBN to broadcast some of ABS-CBN's popular shows.

TV5 also launched a new digital TV box called Sulit TV. This box helps people watch TV5's digital channels and other available digital channels.

In September 2020, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) partnered with Cignal to launch the UAAP Varsity Channel. This channel shows UAAP basketball and volleyball games on TV5 and One Sports.

In January 2021, TV5 started showing selected programs from ABS-CBN. This helped ABS-CBN reach more viewers after its own free-to-air network stopped broadcasting in May 2020.

In June 2022, ABS-CBN and TV5's parent company, MediaQuest Holdings, discussed a possible partnership. However, this proposed investment was later stopped in September 2022 due to concerns from some politicians and government groups.

On February 1, 2023, Guido R. Zaballero became the new president and CEO of TV5 Network.

In April 2023, TV5 launched its high-definition (HD) channel. The main channel also started broadcasting in a widescreen format.

In June 2023, the famous comedy trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon (TVJ) signed a long-term agreement with MediaQuest. They now produce content for TV5 and other MediaQuest channels. Their popular noontime variety show, E.A.T., which later returned to its original name, Eat Bulaga!, premiered on TV5 on July 1, 2023.

In October 2023, TV5 announced that the PBA games would move to another channel, A2Z. TV5 would then focus more on entertainment and news shows.

On February 1, 2024, TV5 launched a new free-to-air channel called RPTV. This happened after another news channel, CNN Philippines, closed down.

On November 4, 2024, TV5's radio division, True FM, moved to a new frequency, 105.9 FM.
