Taconite Harbor is a small, undeveloped place in Cook County, Minnesota, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is part of a larger area called Schroeder Township.
This community is located right on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes. Taconite Harbor is about 33 miles southwest of Grand Marais. It is also about 51 miles northeast of Two Harbors. Minnesota Highway 61 is the main road that goes through the area. The community of Schroeder is very close, just to the northeast of Taconite Harbor.

What Is Taconite Harbor Like Today?
Today, Taconite Harbor is not a busy town. It mainly has a power plant. There are also some old building foundations. You might even spot an abandoned basketball court! It is a quiet place with a lot of natural beauty.
Future Plans for Taconite Harbor
Since 2009, a company called Minnesota Power has been looking at plans for Taconite Harbor. They own some land there that they do not need for their power plant. They are thinking about building new things in the area.
What Might Be Built?
The plans for Taconite Harbor could include many new features. These might make it more like a small town.
- A new sewer system could be built.
- Different shops and businesses might open. These would be around a central village square.
- New paved parking lots could be added.
- There might even be a City Hall. If a City Hall is built, Taconite Harbor could become an official city.
Connecting to the Gitchi-Gami State Trail
Taconite Harbor is also expected to be an important stop. It will be along the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. This trail is a popular path for biking and walking. It runs along the beautiful North Shore of Lake Superior.
