The Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, often called Soviet Tajikistan or Tajik SSR, was a part of the Soviet Union. It existed from 1929 to 1991. Today, this area is known as the independent country of Tajikistan. It is located in the southern, mountainous part of Central Asia.
What Was the Tajik SSR?
The Tajik SSR was created on December 5, 1929. It was meant to be a special home for the Tajik people within the Soviet Union. Before this, it was part of a larger area called the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Tajik ASSR). This earlier area was formed in 1924. It was part of the Uzbek SSR, which was mostly for Turkic peoples. The Soviet Union decided to divide Central Asia into different republics for different ethnic groups. This process was called "national delimitation."
Becoming Independent
On August 24, 1990, the Tajik SSR declared that it was sovereign. This meant it wanted to be in charge of its own land. On August 31, 1991, it changed its name to the "Republic of Tajikistan." Just over a week later, on September 9, 1991, it officially declared its full independence from the Soviet Union.
Where Was It Located?
The Tajik SSR shared borders with several other places. To the south, it bordered Afghanistan. To the west, it bordered Uzbekistan. To the north, it was next to Kirghizia. To the east, it bordered China. There was also a narrow strip of land called the Wakhan Corridor that separated it from Pakistan to the south.
