Tewitfield is a small place in Lancashire, England. It is close to the towns of Borwick and Carnforth. Tewitfield is part of the Priest Hutton area. The name "tewit" comes from an old word for the bird we now call a lapwing.
The Lancaster Canal at Tewitfield
Tewitfield is an important spot on the Lancaster Canal. It is currently the end of the part of the canal where boats can travel. This makes it the furthest north point for boats on inland waterways in England and Wales.
The Inland Waterways Association has a fun challenge called the "Silver Paddle Challenge." It encourages boaters to explore far-off parts of the canal network. Tewitfield Marina is one of the places you can visit for this challenge.
Restoring the Canal
Groups like the Lancaster Canal Trust and the Northern Reaches Restoration Group want to open the canal again. They hope to extend it all the way to Kendal, Cumbria, which was its original end point.
To do this, they need to fix seven special structures called locks. These locks are just north of Tewitfield. Locks help boats move up or down hills on a canal. The ones here do not have gates and only work like small waterfalls. These old locks are very important. They are even listed as Grade II buildings, meaning they are protected for their history.
Tewitfield Chapel
Tewitfield Methodist Chapel is an interesting old building. Some people think it might have been a pub for the workers who built the canal long ago. In 2017, the chapel became a base for volunteers. These volunteers work hard to help restore and look after the canal.
