The Brack is a mountain found in the Arrochar Alps in Scotland. It is located in Argyll and Bute, on the south side of Glen Croe, close to Loch Goil.
This mountain has two main tops, or summits. You can see the lower peak, called Cruach Fhiarach, from the shores of Loch Long. The main, higher peak of The Brack can be seen from Glen Croe and Loch Goil.
The Brack is part of the Ardgoil range. This area is like a finger of land, called a peninsula, with Loch Goil on its west side and Loch Long on its east side. Both of these lochs are long, narrow inlets of the Firth of Clyde, which is a large sea area. The Brack is linked by high ridges to other mountains like Ben Donich and Cnoc Coinnich. It is also surrounded by several taller mountains.
The Brack is known as a Corbett. A Corbett is a mountain in Scotland that is between 2,500 feet (762 metres) and 3,000 feet (914.4 metres) high. The Loch Lomond and Cowal Way, a popular walking path, goes south of The Brack. It crosses a low pass, called a bealach, that separates The Brack from Cnoc Coinnich.
Exploring The Brack: How to Climb It
People usually climb The Brack starting from Glen Croe. Often, they climb it along with the nearby mountain, Ben Donich. You can also walk across the mountain by climbing up from Glen Croe and then going down the south-west ridge. This path leads to the top of Coilessan Glen. Another way to climb The Brack is to start from Lochgoilhead.
Wildlife Around The Brack
The rugged areas around Glen Croe, the Arrochar Alps, Ardgartan, and Loch Goil are home to many animals. You might spot pine martens, which are small, quick animals related to weasels. Large birds like eagles also live here, soaring high above the mountains.
Mountain Climbing Challenges
The Brack is a popular spot for climbers because it offers different climbing routes. These routes can be used in both summer and winter. For example, the Inglis Clark Arete is a clear ridge that stands out on the east side when you look at the mountain from Glen Croe. Also, you can see two deep cuts in the large north-facing cliff. These are called Great Central Gully and Elephant Gully. The details about climbing routes on The Brack are written in a special guide book by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. This book covers climbing in Arran, Arrochar, and the Southern Highlands.
