What Does the Name Tibasosa Mean?

The name Tibasosa comes from the ancient Chibcha language. In this language, "Tibasosa" means "Chief of the domain." This tells us that an important leader once lived here.

A Look at Tibasosa's History

Early Times: Before the Spanish Arrived

Long ago, before the Spanish came to Colombia, Tibasosa was part of a large group of communities called the Muisca Confederation. A local leader, known as a cacique, ruled Tibasosa. This cacique was loyal to Tundama, another powerful leader. They also respected the high priest iraca of Sugamuxi.

In 1537, a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada arrived. He was on his way to the important Sun Temple. This is how the Spanish first discovered the lands of Tibasosa.

Founding of the Town

Tibasosa was officially founded on December 19, 1778. The Viceroy, Manuel Antonio Flórez, made this happen. He issued a special order and even appointed a mayor to govern the new town.

Many people from far away decided to settle in Tibasosa. They liked the climate there. Some important Spanish families also moved to the town. You can still see their old two-story houses with beautiful balconies today. These houses are a reminder of Tibasosa's colonial past.

Tibasosa and Colombia's Independence

Tibasosa played a part in Colombia's fight for independence. In 1781, the town joined the Movement Comunero. This was one of the first uprisings against Spanish rule in Colombia. The army from Tibasosa left to join the troops of General Juan Francisco Berbeo near Zipaquirá.

The people of Tibasosa also helped the independence cause during the Battle of Vargas Swamp. A brave soldier named Inocencio Chincá was wounded in this battle and later died in Tibasosa.

On March 30, 1820, the famous leader Simón Bolívar visited Tibasosa. He was on his way to Santa Rosa de Viterbo.
