Timrå IK is a professional ice hockey team from Timrå, a town in Sweden. They play in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), which is the top ice hockey league in Sweden. The team earned their spot in the SHL by winning the 2021 SHL qualifiers.

Timrå IK has played in Sweden's top league many times. This includes seasons from 1956 to 1976, 1977 to 1978, 1981 to 1982, 2000 to 2013, and 2018 to 2019. Their home games are played at Timrå Isstadion, which can hold 6,000 fans.

The club started on May 11, 1928, as a boxing club. They added an ice hockey section in 1937. Timrå IK has a long-standing rivalry with Modo Hockey. Both teams are from the same area in Sweden, Västernorrland County.

Team History

The club's roots go back to two older clubs: Wifstavarvs GIF (started in 1921) and Östrands IF (started in 1931). Wifstavarvs GIF later became Wifstavarvs IK in 1928. Both clubs began playing ice hockey in 1938.

In the summer of 1942, Wifstavarvs IK and Östrands IF joined together. They formed a new club called Wifsta/Östrands IF, often known as W/Ö. W/Ö played in the Swedish Championship for the first time in 1943.

Five seasons later, in 1948–49, the team joined Sweden's national league system. They started in the third league and quickly moved up. Wifsta/Östrands IF won nine out of ten games and advanced to the second league.

In the spring of 1956, W/Ö made it to the top national league. This was a big step for the team. The top league, called Division I, was growing at that time.

In 1963, another local club, Fagerviks GF, joined W/Ö. The team's name changed again to Wifsta/Östrand–Fagerviks IF, or WÖF.

W/Ö started playing their home games on an artificial ice rink in 1958. A few years later, an indoor ice arena was built. WÖF played their first indoor season in 1965–66. Just one year later, in 1966–67, the long name was finally changed to Timrå IK.

Timrå IK continued to play well and stayed in the top league until 1975. That year, the new Elitserien was formed. Timrå finished last and was moved down to a lower league after 20 years in the top division.

They returned to the second league for the 1976–77 season. Timrå won all 22 games and earned promotion back to the top league. However, these returns were short-lived. They only stayed for one year in 1977–78 and again in 1981–82 before being moved down again.

Many years later, in 1990, the club tried to get back to its former glory. They teamed up with a nearby club, IF Sundsvall Hockey, to form Sundsvall/Timrå Hockey. This partnership did not bring success and ended a few years later.

For the 1994–95 season, the club was briefly known as ST Hockey. But since April 6, 1995, they have been known as Timrå IK once more.

In 2000, the team, also known as the Red Eagles, finally earned promotion back to Elitserien. This was on April 14, 2000, after 18 years away from the top league. Almost three years later, in March 2003, Timrå IK played in the Swedish Championship playoffs for the first time since 1974.

During the 2007–08 season, two young players, Anton Lander and Magnus Pääjärvi-Svensson, joined the main team from the junior teams. Even though they were only 16, they played very well. Both signed professional contracts with the club.

In the 2012–13 season, Timrå finished eleventh in the regular season. This meant they had to play in a special series to stay in the top league. However, they did not finish high enough and were moved down to the second-tier league, HockeyAllsvenskan. This was their first time in that league since the 1999–2000 season.

After five seasons in HockeyAllsvenskan, Timrå earned promotion back to the SHL in 2018. Key players like Jonathan Dahlén, Vilmos Galló, Anton Wedin, and goalie Henrik Haukeland helped them achieve this.

Team Logo and Crest

The Timrå IK logo is a shield with two pine trees. The words Timrå IK are written in sky-blue letters at the bottom. This current shield was first used for the 2012–13 season. It replaced the older Timrå Red Eagles shield, which had been used since 1996–97.

The current logo looks a lot like the shield of Timrå Municipality and Västernorrland County. This shows a strong connection to the local area. The very first shield had the club's old abbreviation "WIK" (Wifstavarvs IK) and the year it started. When the club joined with IF Sundsvall Hockey, they used a different logo for "Sundsvall Timrå Hockey" (ST Hockey).

Team Performance Over the Years

Timrå IK has had many ups and downs in its league performance. Here's a look at some of their recent seasons:

  • 2017–18 HockeyAllsvenskan season: Timrå finished 1st in the second league. They won their playoffs and were promoted to the SHL!
  • 2018–19 SHL season: They finished 14th in the SHL and were moved back down to HockeyAllsvenskan.
  • 2019–20 HockeyAllsvenskan season: Timrå finished 3rd. The playoffs were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2020–21 HockeyAllsvenskan season: They finished 1st again! They won their playoffs and were promoted back to the SHL.
  • 2021–22 SHL season: Timrå finished 14th in the SHL. They won their play-out games to stay in the league.
