A Look at Treiten's Past
Treiten was first written about in the year 1221. Back then, it was called Treiton.
Ancient Times
The five hills around the village were once home to people from the Mesolithic period (Middle Stone Age). Many items from the Neolithic (New Stone Age) and Bronze Age have also been found nearby. These discoveries show that people have lived in this area for a very long time! Even pieces of Roman-era bricks were found in a forest called Grammetwald.
Becoming Part of Bern
Treiten was originally part of a larger territory called a Herrschaft which belonged to Erlach. In 1474, the powerful city of Bern bought this entire territory. After that, Treiten became part of the Ins court within the Erlach district, under Bern's rule. Later, in 1852, the local government and the community group in Treiten joined together to form one single body.
Growing as a Village
Treiten started as a farming village along the road between Ins and Aarberg. In 1647, a canal called the Aarberg canal was dug right through the village. About ten years later, in 1656, a mill was built on this canal.
A big project called the Jura water correction happened between 1874 and 1883. This project drained the very wet Grosses Moos marshland. Treiten gained a lot of new farmland from this project. For a while, between 1945 and 1972, there were plans to build a huge airport in the Treiten and Finsterhennen areas. However, this airport project was eventually stopped, and the land went back to being used for farming.
