Trout Creek is a small river, also called a tributary, that flows into Monument Creek in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. It is about 3.4 miles (5.5 km) long. This creek flows through Spring Brook Township.

One cool thing about Trout Creek is that wild trout fish naturally live and reproduce here. The creek doesn't have any official named smaller streams joining it, but it does have three unnamed ones. The ground around the creek is mostly made of solid rock, a type of soil left by glaciers called Wisconsinan Till, and some areas with river deposits, wetlands, and even a small lake.

Journey of Trout Creek: Where Does It Flow?

Trout Creek starts high up on a mountain in Spring Brook Township. It flows towards the northwest for a short distance. Then, it turns and flows north-northeast for a few miles.

Right away, the creek goes through a small pond. After this, it starts flowing down the mountain into a valley. As it moves, one unnamed stream joins it from the left side. Later, two more unnamed streams join it from the right side. The valley then becomes much deeper and narrower. The creek turns north-northwest and flows this way for over a mile. Finally, it turns west and, after a short distance, meets up with Monument Creek.

Smaller Streams Joining Trout Creek

Trout Creek does not have any officially named smaller streams that flow into it. However, it does have several unnamed streams. The biggest of these unnamed streams starts in Pittston Township, Luzerne County. It flows northeast for almost a mile before joining Trout Creek.

Land and Rocks Around Trout Creek

The land around where Trout Creek meets Monument Creek is about 935 feet (285 m) above sea level. Where Trout Creek begins, its source, the land is much higher, between 1,760 and 1,780 feet (540 and 540 m) above sea level.

Near the lower parts of Trout Creek, the ground along the valley floor is made of alluvium. This is soil and rock left behind by flowing water. The sides of the valley are mostly made of solid bedrock. This bedrock includes conglomerate (rock made of pebbles), sandstone, and shale.

Further upstream, the ground along the creek is mainly covered by a type of soil called Wisconsinan Till. This soil was left by glaciers or moved by water. However, there are also large areas of solid bedrock. You can also find small patches of fill (material moved by humans) and wetlands (areas where the land is covered by water). There is also one small lake in the upper part of the creek's area. A part of Mount Pisgah is also located in the area that drains into Trout Creek.

Trout Creek's Water Area and Wildlife

Most of the land that drains water into Trout Creek is in Spring Brook Township, Lackawanna County. However, a small part of the upper area that feeds the creek is in Pittston Township, which is in Luzerne County. Trout Creek is entirely within the area covered by the United States Geological Survey map called Avoca.

As mentioned before, wild trout fish naturally live and reproduce in Trout Creek. They can be found from where the creek starts all the way down to where it joins Monument Creek.

History of Trout Creek

Trout Creek was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on August 2, 1979. This system helps keep track of names for places like rivers and mountains. Its special ID number in the system is 1189833.

In the early 2000s, a plan called the Lackawanna River Watershed Conservation Plan suggested that Spring Brook Township should protect Trout Creek. They recommended that the township include plans to protect the creek in their overall community plans and in their rules for land use and building.
