Troy's Location and Size

Troy is located in the state of Vermont. The town covers a total area of about 36.1 square miles (93.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land, meaning there are no large lakes or rivers within its borders.

A Look Back at Troy's History

Troy was first officially named "Missisquoi." Long ago, it was known for making a lot of cast iron. They produced over 400 tons of it every year!

Early Settlers and Native Americans

In the winter of 1799, a group of American Indians came to Troy. Their chief, Captain Susap, led them. They built their camps by the river and stayed near the colonists for the winter. These Native Americans were very hungry, likely because the moose and deer they used to hunt were gone. The new settlers had hunted them. The Native Americans made things like baskets and birch-bark cups to trade. They left in the spring and never came back.

One person in the group was a Native American woman named Molly Orcutt. She was known among the settlers for her healing skills. She was found dead in Maine in 1817. People believed she was around 140 years old when she died.

Helping Others to Freedom

Before the Civil War, some people in Troy helped others escape slavery. Dr. Levi Moore and A.j. Rowell were part of the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network that helped enslaved people find freedom.

A Big Gun for Space Research

In 1967, a scientist named Gerald Bull built a special laboratory. It was called the Space Research Corporation. This lab was built right on the border between Vermont and Quebec, Canada. Bull wanted to use huge cannons to launch research packages into space. He hoped to send things into orbit using very powerful artillery. However, he later faced legal issues for breaking international rules. This caused his company to go out of business.

Bakers Falls Dam and School Lunch Program

In 1998, a flood damaged the generator at the Bakers Falls dam in Troy. This generator was important because it produced a lot of electricity for the area.

In 2010, the Troy Elementary School had a high number of students who qualified for free lunch. About 73% of students received free lunch. This was much higher than the state average of 31%. The National School Lunch Act helps provide meals to students who need them.
