Tyron Woodley, born on April 7, 1982, is an American athlete who has competed in both mixed martial arts (MMA) and professional boxing. He was once the UFC Welterweight Champion and successfully defended his title four times. He started his professional fighting career in 2009. Before that, he was a talented college wrestler at the University of Missouri, where he earned top honors twice and won a major championship.

Early Life and Wrestling Beginnings
Tyron Woodley grew up in Ferguson, Missouri. He was one of thirteen children and was raised by his mother. In high school, he was a great athlete, playing American football and wrestling. In 2000, he won the Missouri State Wrestling Championship.
After high school, Tyron went to the University of Missouri. He joined their wrestling team and became a two-time All-American wrestler in 2003 and 2005. He finished college in 2005, studying Agricultural Economics.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Tyron Woodley began his professional MMA career on February 7, 2009. He won his first fight by submission in the first round. His second fight also ended in a first-round submission victory.
Fighting in Strikeforce
Woodley joined Strikeforce, a major MMA organization, in June 2009. He quickly signed a six-fight deal after winning his first match there. He continued to win, often by submission, showing his strong wrestling background.
He defeated several opponents, including Zach Light and Rudy Bears. In 2010, he won a fight against André Galvão by knockout. He also won against Tarec Saffiedine and Paul Daley by decision. His winning streak ended in July 2012 when he lost to Nate Marquardt in a fight for the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship.

First Fights in the UFC
Tyron Woodley made his debut in the UFC on February 2, 2013. He won his first UFC fight against Jay Hieron with a knockout in just 36 seconds.
After a close loss to Jake Shields, Woodley bounced back with a knockout win over Josh Koscheck. This win also earned him a "Knockout of the Night" bonus. He then defeated Carlos Condit when Condit suffered a knee injury during their fight.
In 2014, Woodley signed a new eight-fight contract with the UFC. He lost a fight to Rory MacDonald but then quickly won against Dong Hyun Kim by TKO, earning a "Performance of the Night" bonus. He also won a split decision against Kelvin Gastelum.
Becoming UFC Welterweight Champion
On July 30, 2016, Tyron Woodley fought Robbie Lawler for the UFC Welterweight Championship. Woodley won the fight by knockout in the first round, becoming the new champion. This impressive win also earned him another "Performance of the Night" award.
He defended his title for the first time against Stephen Thompson in November 2016. The fight was very close and ended in a majority draw, meaning no one won. Both fighters received "Fight of the Night" bonuses.
They had a rematch in March 2017, and Woodley won again by majority decision, keeping his title. For his third defense, he defeated Demian Maia by unanimous decision, even though he had injured his shoulder during the fight.
Woodley's fourth title defense was against Darren Till in September 2018. He won by submission in the second round, earning another "Performance of the Night" award. After this victory, he was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. This fight was also Till's first loss in MMA.
In his fifth title defense, Woodley faced Kamaru Usman in March 2019. He lost the fight by unanimous decision, ending his nearly three-year reign as champion.
Later UFC Fights
After losing his title, Woodley faced a few tough challenges. A planned rematch with Robbie Lawler was canceled due to Woodley's hand injury. He was also scheduled to fight Leon Edwards, but the event was postponed due to travel restrictions.
He then lost fights to Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington by decision or TKO. His last UFC fight was against Vicente Luque in March 2021, which he lost by submission. This fight earned him a "Fight of the Night" bonus. After this, his contract with the UFC ended.
Professional Boxing Career
Tyron Woodley decided to try professional boxing. He had two fights against internet personality Jake Paul.
First Fight Against Jake Paul
Woodley's first professional boxing match was against Jake Paul on August 29, 2021. Woodley was the first person to take Paul past the second round in his boxing career. However, Woodley ultimately lost the fight by a split decision, meaning two judges scored it for Paul and one for Woodley.
Second Fight Against Jake Paul
On December 18, 2021, Woodley stepped in to fight Jake Paul again on short notice. This time, Woodley was knocked out in the sixth round.

Tyron Woodley has also explored acting. He has appeared in several movies, including Straight Outta Compton, Kickboxer: Vengeance, Sultan, and Escape Plan 2: Hades. He also appeared in the Netflix show Cobra Kai and an episode of S.W.A.T._(2017_TV_series).
Besides acting, he hosts a podcast called "Morning Wood with Deez Nutz" and an internet show on TMZ called "The Hollywood Beatdown."
Personal Life
Tyron Woodley has four children. He hopes to open a non-profit center for young people who are facing difficulties. When his hometown of Ferguson, Missouri experienced civil unrest, Woodley spoke out against the violence and looting. His favorite sport to watch is basketball.
