Jake Shields (born January 9, 1979) is an American former mixed martial artist. He was a champion in several fighting organizations. These include the last Rumble on the Rock Welterweight Champion and the only Elite XC Welterweight Champion. He was also a former Shooto Welterweight Champion and Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Shields also competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He challenged Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship. After an early loss, he went on a winning streak of 15 fights over six years. He described his fighting style as "American Jiu-Jitsu".

Early Life and Wrestling

Jake Shields grew up near Mountain Ranch, California. He was a wrestler at Calaveras High School. Later, he wrestled at Cuesta College. In 2001, he received a wrestling scholarship. This allowed him to attend San Francisco State University.

Jake Shields' MMA Career

Shields is well-known for his impressive 15-fight winning streak. During this time, he defeated eight of his eleven opponents. This streak ended when he lost to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. This fight was a five-round battle at UFC 129. Shields has won the Shooto World Mixed Martial Arts Championship. He also won the Rumble on the Rock World Championship. He won the Elite XC Welterweight Championship by using a guillotine choke against Nick Thompson.

In 2005, he placed third at the ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship. This is a major grappling competition.

At Strikeforce: Lawler vs. Shields, Shields fought the last EliteXC middleweight champion. He won this fight by submission in the first round. He used a guillotine choke.

At Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers, Shields fought Jason 'Mayhem' Miller. This was for the vacant Strikeforce Middleweight Championship. Shields won the fight by a unanimous decision.

Shields successfully defended his Strikeforce title. He defeated former Pride champion Dan Henderson on April 17, 2010. This fight took place at Strikeforce: Nashville.

Fighting in the UFC

On June 30, 2010, Strikeforce released Shields from their organization. In July 2010, it was reported that Shields would join the UFC.

Shields made his UFC debut on October 23, 2010. He fought Martin Kampmann at UFC 121. Shields won the fight by a split decision.

He then faced Georges St-Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship. This championship fight was on April 30, 2011, at UFC 129 in Toronto. Shields lost the fight by unanimous decision.

Shields fought Jake Ellenberger on September 17, 2011. He lost this fight in the first round by TKO.

On February 26, 2012, Shields faced Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 144. He won this fight by unanimous decision.

Shields moved back to the middleweight division for his next fight. He faced Ed Herman on August 11, 2012, at UFC 150. Shields was initially declared the winner. However, the result of the fight was later changed to a No Contest due to a rule violation.

Shields then fought Tyron Woodley in a welterweight bout. This fight was on June 15, 2013, at UFC 161. Shields won the fight by split decision.

His next opponent was Demian Maia on October 9, 2013. This fight took place mostly on the ground. Shields won by split decision.

He fought Héctor Lombard on March 15, 2014, at UFC 171. Shields lost this fight by unanimous decision.

On April 6, 2014, Shields was released from the UFC.

World Series of Fighting Career

In April 2014, Shields signed a contract with the World Series of Fighting. He was supposed to fight Jon Fitch at WSOF 11. However, Shields had to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.

Shields made his debut for World Series of Fighting on October 11, 2014. He fought Ryan Ford in Canada. Shields won the fight by submission in the first round.

He then faced Brian Foster on January 17, 2015. Shields won this fight by submission in the first round as well.

Shields fought Rousimar Palhares on August 1, 2015, at WSOF 22. He lost the fight by submission. This was his first loss by submission.

Shields was scheduled to fight Jon Fitch again. This was for the vacant WSOF welterweight championship. The fight was canceled due to contract issues.

The fight for the WSOF Welterweight Championship against Jon Fitch was rescheduled. It took place on December 31, 2016, at WSOF 34. Shields lost the fight by unanimous decision.

Professional Fighters League

Shields joined the Professional Fighters League (PFL). He made his PFL debut on July 29, 2017. He won his first fight against Danny Davis Jr. by unanimous decision.

On July 5, 2018, Shields had his PFL season debut. He lost to Ray Cooper III by technical knockout in the second round.

On August 16, 2018, Shields defeated Herman Terrado at PFL 6. This win helped him advance to the playoffs.

On October 20, 2018, Shields faced Ray Cooper III again. He lost the rematch by technical knockout in the first round.

Grappling Events

On November 22, 2014, Shields competed in a grappling match. He fought Roberto Satoshi in Metamoris V. The match ended in a draw.

On April 2, 2016, Shields fought AJ Agazarm at Polaris 3. The match was controversial and ended in a draw.

Shields defeated Diego Sanchez in a grappling match. This happened at High Rollerz 4 on February 5, 2020.

Television and Film Appearances

Shields starred in and helped produce Fight Life. This is a documentary about the sport of MMA. The film was released in 2013. Shields also appeared on Bully Beatdown on MTV. He was a grappling coach for Chuck Liddell on The Ultimate Fighter 11. He also appeared on the Animal Planet channel in episodes of Wild Recon and Venom in Vegas.

Personal Life

Jake Shields has a daughter, born in December 2000. He is a single father. On August 29, 2011, his father and manager, Jack Shields, passed away at age 67.

Shields is a lifelong vegetarian. He has appeared in ads for PETA. In these ads, he promoted his vegetarian lifestyle.
