Unione Sportiva Grosseto 1912 is an Italian football club. It is based in the city of Grosseto, which is in Tuscany, Italy. The club started in 1912. Its first name was Unione Ginnico Sportiva Grossetana.
The team's main nickname is Il Grifone, which means "The Griffon". This name comes from the griffon animal shown on their logo. The team's colors are red and white. Currently, they play in Serie D, which is the fourth level of football in Italy.
The club had a great run from 2007 to 2013. During this time, they played for six years in Serie B. This is a higher level of Italian football. In the 2008-09 season, they even reached the play-off semifinals. The club was restarted in 2017.
Club History: A Journey Through Football
The club began in 1912 as Football Club Grosseto. Their very first match was played in Orbetello, which they lost. Nine years later, in 1921, the club officially joined the Italian Football Federation. They were allowed to play in the Promozione division.
In 1927, the team changed its official colors. They switched from black and white to the red and white colors they use today. For many years, Grosseto played in different leagues. These ranged from Serie C to amateur leagues.
In 1995, the club faced financial problems. Because of this, the football federation removed them. This meant they lost their spot in Serie C2, even though they had won Serie D that same year. After this, Grosseto joined Eccellenza. They finished 15th and were moved down to Promozione. However, they quickly moved up two leagues in a row from 1997 to 1999. This brought Grosseto back to Serie D.
The Camilli Years: Aiming for the Top (2000-2015)
In 2000, Piero Camilli bought the club. His goal was to bring Grosseto back into professional football. In the 2001–2002 season, Grosseto finished second in Serie D. They were later allowed to join Serie C2 because there was an open spot.
The club then won Serie C2 in 2004. This meant they were promoted to Serie C1. In 2005, Grosseto made it to the promotion playoffs. But they lost in the semifinal to Pavia. One year later, Grosseto reached the playoffs again. They beat Sassari Torres in the semifinals. However, they lost to Frosinone in the finals. This meant they missed their first chance to be promoted to Serie B.
In the 2006–2007 season, things changed. Under coach Antonello Cuccureddu, Grosseto finally won Serie C1/A. They won their final match 1–0 against Padova. This victory earned them a historic spot in the Serie B 2007-08. Coach Cuccureddu left the club a few days after this big win. Giorgio Roselli became the new coach for their first Serie B season.
Grosseto's first Serie B season started with three losses. This led to coach Roselli being replaced by Stefano Pioli in September 2007. Pioli helped the team finish in the middle of the league table.
The 2008–09 season started with high hopes. The team played very well at first under new coach Elio Gustinetti. But then they had a tough period. This caused Grosseto to fall out of the promotion playoff spots. Gustinetti was replaced by Ezio Rossi. Later, Gustinetti returned as coach. The team finished 6th and made it to the playoffs. Grosseto won their first playoff match against Livorno (2–0). But they lost the second match (1–4) and missed out on promotion to Serie A.
The 2009–10 season was quite good for the club. They finished 7th, just a few points away from the playoff zone. This season was special because of their top striker, Mauricio Pinilla. He scored 24 goals in 24 matches. He later moved to US Palermo in Serie A in 2010.
In August 2012, Grosseto faced a challenge. They were temporarily moved down to Lega Pro Prima Divisione. This was due to an investigation. However, on August 22, 2012, Grosseto and its president were cleared. They were allowed to stay in Serie B.
The club was moved down from Serie B at the end of the 2012-13 season. This ended their six years in Serie B. They then spent two years playing in the third division. In the summer of 2015, owner Piero Camilli left the club after 15 years.
New Beginnings: FC Grosseto (2015-2017)
A new club, F.C. Grosseto S.S.D., took over on August 6, 2015. However, this club stopped playing after being moved down to Eccellenza Tuscany in 2017.
The Return of US Grosseto 1912 (2017-2022)
On July 18, 2017, local business owners Mario and Simone Ceri stepped in. They owned Associazione Calcio Roselle, a local football club. This club was playing in Eccellenza Toscana. The Ceri brothers made an agreement with former owner Piero Camilli. They changed their club's name to Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Unione Sportiva Grosseto 1912. This brought back the city's football tradition.
The 2017–18 season ended with a third-place finish in Eccellenza Tuscany. The next season, they finished first and were promoted to Serie D. The 2019–20 season marked the club's return to the fourth level of Italian football. They also earned a second promotion in a row to Serie C for the 2020–2021 season.
Lamioni Takes Over (2022-Present)
In November 2022, a well-known local businessman, Giovanni Lamioni, bought the club. He bought it from the previous owner, Salvatore Guida. Lamioni made Antonio Fiorini the president. He also brought back Filippo Vetrini as the general sporting director. The city was very happy about this change. People became excited about the team again after some disappointing results. Lamioni has said he wants to build a team that will compete to return to Serie C.
