Unadilla is a small village in Otsego County, New York, United States. It is part of the larger town also named Unadilla. In 2020, about 1,065 people lived there. The village is located in the southern part of the town, southwest of Oneonta. People sometimes call Unadilla "The Village Beautiful."

History of Unadilla

Early Settlements and Native American History

The area around Unadilla was first home to a Seneca Indian village. This village was located where the Susquehanna and Unadilla Rivers meet. Today, the village of Sidney is in that spot. The name "Unadilla" comes from an Iroquois word. It means "Meeting Place," which makes sense because two rivers meet there.

Around 1770, the first European settlers arrived in Unadilla. A group of Scots-Irish people settled where the Ouleout Creek and the Susquehanna River join.

Unadilla During the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, both the early Unadilla village and another village called Onaquaga were used by Loyalists. Loyalists were people who supported the British during the war. They used these villages as bases to attack frontier communities. Because of this, the Continental Army (the American army) destroyed both villages in October 1778.

Growth and Development of Unadilla

After being destroyed, Unadilla Village was settled again. It was first known as "Wattles Ferry." The village grew because it became an important stop for people traveling west. The Catskill Turnpike, an important road, crossed the Susquehanna River at Wattles Ferry.

Later, railroads became more important than turnpikes. The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad (which later became the Delaware and Hudson Railway) passed through Unadilla. This helped the small community continue to grow and do well.

Unadilla officially became a village in 1827. It was fully incorporated in 1889. The village has many old homes, some built even before the American Civil War.

Special Achievements and Historic Places

Unadilla is home to Boy Scout Troop #1. This troop was started in 1910. It is known as the oldest Boy Scout troop in the United States that has been running continuously.
