Unterlangenegg (also known as Unter Langenegg) is a small town, called a municipality, located in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. It's part of the Thun district.

A Look at History

Unterlangenegg was first mentioned in official records in 1308. Back then, it was known as Langonegga.

Early Days

During the Middle Ages, the land and farms in this area were part of a larger territory called the Herrschaft of Heimberg. By the 1200s, the powerful Counts of Kyburg owned this territory.

In 1382, Rudolf II of Kyburg tried to attack the city of Solothurn, but he failed. This attack started a war called the Burgdorferkrieg with the Old Swiss Confederacy. During this war, the city of Bern took control of many Kyburg lands.

As part of a peace treaty in 1384, Bern gained the Heimberg lands, which included Unterlangenegg. The area then became part of the Bernese Steffisburg court in the Thun District.

Church and Community

Unterlangenegg was originally part of the Steffisburg church area. In the 1600s, Anabaptists, a group with different religious beliefs, started to settle in the Zulg valley.

To strengthen the Swiss Reformed faith in the area, a large parish church was built in Schwarzenegg village in 1693. This new church served the entire valley. Schwarzenegg grew into a local hub, but it never became its own municipality. Today, Schwarzenegg is split between Unterlangenegg and Oberlangenegg.

In 1950, a secondary school was built in Unterlangenegg. This school provides education for students from five nearby towns.
