The Story of Valence d'Agen: A Look Back in Time

Valence d'Agen is a special kind of town called a Bastide. These towns were built in the 13th century, often with a grid-like street plan. Valence d'Agen was actually founded by Edward I, who was the King of England at the time. He also ruled a part of France called Aquitane.

Discovering the Town's Heritage

It's easy to walk around Valence d'Agen and find its historical treasures. Water from the nearby Garonne river flows into many fountains around the town. You can also find old public washhouses, called lavoirs. These were places where people used to wash their clothes.

Famous Lavoirs of Valence d'Agen

There are three main lavoirs still standing in Valence d'Agen:

  • The Théron Lavoir: This is the oldest one, possibly from the late 1700s. It has a unique round roof. It was repaired in 1880 to make it stronger against cold weather.
  • The Saint-Bernard Lavoir: Built after 1807, this lavoir originally had a drinking trough for animals. A roof was added in 1924 to protect people washing clothes from the rain. Both the roof and the brickwork have been fixed up recently.
  • The Pé de Gleyze Lavoir: This lavoir dates from the 1800s and has a more traditional design compared to the others.
