Verdi (pronounced VUR-dye) is a small community in Washoe County, Nevada, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area that looks like a town but isn't officially governed as one.
Verdi is located on the western edge of the Reno–Sparks area. It is very close to Interstate 80, a major highway. The community stretches east towards a part of it called Lawton, which is surrounded by Reno, Nevada. Right next door, across the state line in California, is another community also named Verdi, California. Both places are near the Verdi Range mountains in California. In 2010, about 1,415 people lived in Verdi.

A Look Back in Time
Verdi was first known as O'Neils Crossing. This name came from a man who built a bridge there in 1860.
How Verdi Got Its Name
The town of Verdi was named after Giuseppe Verdi in 1868. Giuseppe Verdi was a famous Italian opera composer. Charles Crocker, who helped start the Central Pacific Railroad, chose the name. He picked it by pulling a slip of paper with Verdi's name from a hat.
The Great Train Robbery of 1870
On November 4, 1870, a train traveling from San Francisco to Virginia City was robbed near Verdi. Five men stopped the train by blocking the tracks. The train was carrying a lot of gold and silver, about $60,000 worth. The robbers managed to get away with about $41,000. This same train was robbed again later in Elko County.

Verdi is right on the western border of Nevada, next to the California state line. Its exact location is 39.5183 degrees North and -119.9887 degrees West.
The total area of Verdi is about 3.43 square miles (8.89 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 3.31 square miles (8.58 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.12 square miles (0.30 square kilometers), is water.
Earthquakes in 2008
From February to June 2008, Verdi experienced many small earthquakes. This event is called an earthquake swarm. More than 5,000 earthquakes happened during this time. Their strength ranged from 0.7 to 4.7 on the Richter magnitude scale.
