History of Vernon Center
Vernon Center was officially planned out in 1857. Its name comes from Mount Vernon, which was the home of George Washington, the first president of the United States.
In 2005, something big happened in Vernon Center. On October 25, a grain elevator in the downtown area exploded. It was full of corn, about 200,000 bushels (which is a lot!). Six people were hurt in the explosion. Flames from the explosion shot up about 200 feet (61 meters) into the air.
