Villa Nougués is a beautiful town located in the Lules Department of Tucumán Province, in northern Argentina. It is a popular place for people to visit and live because of its stunning mountain views and pleasant climate.

History of Villa Nougués

Villa Nougués is built on the eastern side of San Javier Hill. It sits high up, about 1,350 meters (4,450 feet) above sea level. A long time ago, before 1767, a Jesuit reduction (a type of settlement created by Jesuit missionaries) was located here.

In 1899, a very important landowner from Tucumán, Luis Francisco Nougués, chose this spot for his summer house. His brothers, Juan Carlos and Alberto, also built homes here. Even the person who started the University of Tucumán, who was also named Luis Francisco Nougués, built a house in this area.

These families decided to create a community. They wanted a place for the people who worked for Nougués' large San Pablo sugar plantation and mill. So, they officially founded the town in 1904. Luis Nougués later became the Governor of Tucumán from 1906 to 1909.

Buildings and Sights

Many of the first buildings in Villa Nougués were designed by a Polish-Argentine architect named Juan Hlawascek. He used a special style called Norman architecture. This style was popular with the Nougués family, who originally came from a region in France called Haute-Garonne.

Some of the most famous buildings include:

  • The Villa Nougués Inn, built in 1903.
  • The Hotel Club Sol.
  • A beautiful church built in a Neo-Gothic style, finished in 1918. Many couples from all over Argentina come here to get married.

There are also many other interesting places to see:

  • Lovely gardens all around the town.
  • The Virgen de Lourdes grotto, which is a small cave-like shrine.
  • A fun suspension bridge.
  • A large statue called Cristo Redentor (meaning "Christ the Redeemer"), created by sculptor Juan Carlos Iramain.
  • The Las Hortensias Golf Club, which is the highest golf course in Argentina.

The area around Villa Nougués is covered by the Yungas forest. This forest is full of beautiful plants like junipers, gladiolus, hydrangea, and violets. Because of its natural beauty and its closeness to San Miguel de Tucumán, Villa Nougués became a popular place for both people to live and for tourists to visit.

Climate and Weather

Because Villa Nougués is located high up in the mountains, it has a special type of weather called a subtropical highland climate. This means it has mild, rainy summers and cool, dry winters. It's a pleasant climate that makes the town enjoyable year-round.
