Viola praemorsa is a type of violet flower. People often call it the canary violet, Astoria violet, or yellow montane violet. It gets these names because of its bright yellow flowers and where it grows.

What Does the Canary Violet Look Like?

The canary violet is a plant that comes back every year. It can grow up to about 30 centimeters tall, which is like a foot. This plant has special underground stems called rhizomes. These help it spread and grow new plants.

Its leaves are thick and a bit fleshy. They can be shaped like a spear or an oval. The tips of the leaves can be pointed or rounded. The leaves at the bottom of the plant can be up to 8.5 centimeters long. Leaves higher up the stem are about the same size or a little longer. Often, the leaves are covered in many tiny hairs. They grow on long stalks called petioles.

Each plant usually has one flower on a tall, straight stem. The flower has five bright yellow petals. The three bottom petals often have brownish-purple lines, like tiny veins. The two top petals might also have some brownish-purple color on their outer parts.

Where Does the Canary Violet Grow?

The canary violet naturally grows in western North America. You can find it in Canada, in the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. In the U.S., it grows in many states. These include Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, California, Nevada, and Colorado.

This plant likes to grow on mountain slopes. It often lives where there are forests or grassy meadows. It can grow in soil that is either moist or dry. In California, you can often spot it in yellow-pine forests.
