Vivian is a small community in Lyman County, South Dakota, USA. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area used for gathering population information. In 2020, about 98 people lived there.

History of Vivian

Vivian got its name from Vivian Hunter. She was the wife of an important official who worked for the Milwaukee Road railroad. A famous person named Norman Rudolph Prahl was born in Vivian in 1919. He later became a state legislator in Minnesota.

Geography and Location

Vivian is located in the western part of Lyman County. It is about 1 mile north of Interstate 90, which is a major highway. You can get to Vivian from Exit 214 on I-90. The community is also 1.5 miles east of U.S. Route 83.

From Vivian, if you travel east on I-90 for about 23 miles, you will reach Kennebec. Kennebec is the main town, or county seat, for Lyman County. If you go west on I-90 for the same distance, you will arrive at Murdo. Murdo is the county seat for the nearby Jones County. If you take US-83 north, you will reach Pierre, the capital city of South Dakota, in about 34 miles.

The United States Census Bureau says that the Vivian CDP covers a total area of 4.5 square kilometers (about 1.73 square miles). All of this area is land. There is no water within the community's boundaries. Water from Vivian flows into Medicine Creek. This creek sometimes dries up, but it eventually flows east into the Missouri River.

World Record Hailstone

Vivian holds an amazing world record! It is home to the largest hailstone ever measured. On July 23, 2010, a huge hailstone fell during a big storm that hit the town. This hailstone was 8 inches (about 20 centimeters) across. It measured 18.62 inches (about 47 centimeters) around. It also weighed 1.93 pounds (about 0.88 kilograms). This incredible hailstone broke the previous record. The old record was held by a hailstone that fell in Aurora, Nebraska, in 2003.
