Västerås Municipality (Västerås kommun) is a local government area in central Sweden. It is part of Västmanland County. The main town, or "seat," of the municipality is Västerås.
Sometimes, the municipality uses the name Västerås stad (which means City of Västerås). This name refers to the entire area, even the parts that are not city-like. The municipality was formed over time through different changes. Most of these changes happened in 1967. The municipality as it is today was officially created in 1971.
