WSG Tirol is a professional football club from Wattens, Tyrol, Austria. Its full name is Wattener Sportgemeinschaft Tirol, which means "Wattens' Sports Community Tyrol." The club plays in the Austrian Football Bundesliga, which is the top football league in Austria.

WSG Tirol was founded in 1930. The team plays its home games at Tivoli Stadion Tirol in Innsbruck. They have been playing there since 2019.

Club History

The club started in 1930. Over the years, it has had a few different names:

  • SC Wattens (1930–1953)
  • SV Wattens (1953–1971)
  • WSG Wattens (1984–2019)

Early Years and Success

The club's best time was between 1968 and 1971. During these years, they played in the Austrian Football Bundesliga, which was the highest division in Austrian football.

Merging and Reforming

From 1971 to 1984, WSG Wattens joined with another club, FC Wacker Innsbruck. Together, they formed a team called SSW Innsbruck. This combined team was very successful! They won the Bundesliga five times and even reached the quarter-finals of the 1977-78 European Cup. Even though they merged, WSG Wattens kept its own youth teams during this time.

Return to the Bundesliga

After 1984, WSG Wattens played in lower leagues, like the Austrian Regional League West and the First League. In 2019, they achieved a big goal: they were promoted back to the Bundesliga!

When they got promoted, the club changed its name to WSG Swarovski Tirol. This was because Swarovski, a famous company, was their sponsor. However, in 2021, Swarovski stopped its sponsorship. So, the club's name changed back to WSG Tirol.

Home Stadium

WSG Tirol used to play their home matches at Gernot Langes Stadion in Wattens. This stadium could hold 5,500 fans. In 2013, the stadium was renamed to honor Gernot Langes, who was the club's president for a long time.

Moving to Tivoli Stadion Tirol

The Gernot Langes Stadion did not meet the rules for playing in the Bundesliga. Because of this, the club planned to build a new, modern stadium with space for 6,000 people. While the new stadium was being planned, WSG Tirol started using the Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck. This is where they play their home games now.
