Waldringfield is a charming village located in the East Suffolk area of Suffolk, England. It sits right on the banks of the River Deben. This beautiful area is part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village is about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south of the town of Woodbridge. It is also about 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of Ipswich, which is the main town of the county.

Waldringfield is home to All Saints' Church, a very old building from the 14th century. It was repaired in the 1800s and is now a special historic building.

The village also has Waldringfield Heath, a large open space. Here you can find the Waldringfield Golf Club. There is also a yacht club, called Waldringfield Yacht Club, for people who enjoy sailing.

Scientists found a very old tooth from a type of monkey called a macaque here. This tooth was found in the Red Crag Formation. It is one of the oldest monkey teeth ever found in Europe!

What is Waldringfield's History?

The name Waldringfield comes from old English words. It means 'open land of the family or followers of a man named Waldhere'. People have lived in Waldringfield for a very long time. We know this because Iron Age pottery pieces, from around 100 BC, have been found nearby.

How Old is Waldringfield?

Waldringfield is mentioned in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was written in 1086. In it, the village is called 'Waldingafelda'. There was also a place called 'Minima Waldringafelda', meaning 'Lesser Waldringfield'.

What Industries Were in Waldringfield?

Waldringfield was a busy industrial place between about 1860 and 1907.

  • First, until about 1895, people dug up a material called coprolite. This was washed and sorted on the beach. It was then sent by boat to factories in Ipswich. There, it was used to make early fertiliser for farms.
  • Later, in the late 1800s, a cement-making industry started. Workers mixed mud from the river with chalk brought in by boat. Around 100 boats arrived each month! This industry used twelve special ovens called 'bottleneck' kilns. It lasted until 1907. The kilns were taken down in 1912.
